Cowboys could release Miles Austin

11:20 AM ET 02.23 | An interesting note surfaced on Saturday morning regarding the future of wide receiver Miles Austin in Dallas. With free agency looming and the Cowboys needing to get under the salary cap, Austin could be one of the bigger name cap casualties heading into free agency. Austin was once a real threat for the Cowboys, but with his recent injuries, loss of explosion and the emergence of Dez Bryant, the team could find it easy to cut ties with the veteran receiver. Not only has Austin declined as a player, but the decision to release Austin would save the team around $5 million in cap space. Austin is signed through the 2016 season and his salary is set to make a major leap. In 2013, he is set to make $6.732 million, then the salary takes a dip in 2014 to $5.5 million. In 2015, the salary jumps again to $6.888 million, before an $11.38 million figure in 2016.

If Austin gets released someone should beat some sense into JJ.

If Romo's contract isn't done by next week, I can almost guarantee Austin is gone.

Trade Romo and sign Alex Smith. IMO Alex Smith will manage the talent around him better and smarter than Romo.

What difference does it make? Austin is always injured, even when he's actually playing.
I love the Cowboys and I was enchanted by Austin's freakish talent in 2012, when he put up over 1,300 receiving yards and 11 TD's in only nine starts.
But since then it's been nothing but missed games or more commonly, games played but while injured, which more or less neutralizes almost all of Austin's skill set.
I love his game and I hope he can someday stay healthy, but if the Cowboys cut him today I would understand completely.

Personally I'd love to see JJ cut some of Dallas' dead weight (Doug Free, Miles Austin) and let some of their FA's (Anthony Spencer, Eric Frampton, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins) leave, and instead focus on some quality FA offensive linemen like the probably too expensive Ryan Clady or Brandon Albert, or maybe Andre Smith or maybe even Jake Long, who potentially might be had for a lesser than expected price tag considering his 2012 campaign.

2009*
And I agree with you. On a "per start" level Austin was the best receiver in the league that year.

Or even try to snag Chance Warmack or Jonathan Cooper in the draft.

Good catch; Austin was nothing close to those numbers in 2012.
But yeah, he was brilliant in '09. I truly thought he was about to be the NFL's second best wide receiver behind Calvin Johnson. His combination of size, speed and strength was completely off the charts.

At that time I was thinking of him as the next Terrell Owens (sans attitude).
The broadcasters were always keen on zooming in on his thighs to show how much stronger his leg muscles were than other receivers.
Which was creepy. But it was / is a valid point. The guy has running power like a tailback, making him a force to be reckoned with after the catch. Really amazes me how easily he settled back into the realm of "slightly above average".

Haha, are you kidding?!? With Dallas' lack of an Oline Smith would be decapitated within week 2.
