Illini land junior commitment

Illinois isn't winning as many basketball games as it expected this season, but the victories in recruiting continue for coach Bruce Weber. Tyler Griffey, a 6-foot-8 inch, 220-pound junior forward from Lafayette High School in the St. Louis suburb of Ballwin, will announce this weekend that he will attend Illinois, sources said. Griffey is the fourth member of the Class of 2009 to make an oral commitment to coach Bruce Weber but the first big man. Griffey also had offers from Missouri, Purdue and St. Louis.

Nice to see Weber turning around the negative recruiting trends he has had the last couple of years.

Report Offensive CommentI think that its hard to argue that the Illini would get him. I mean who would you rather play for: Missouri, Purdue, or St. Louis. Sure those are somewhat solid teams, but it would be hard to go against going to Illinois with a coach like Weber. I applaud Weber for getting him and hopefully he will snag more top recruits. Though this is only an oral commitment and I dont think that it will be final until later. (Eric Gordon made a verbal commitment to Illinois but instead went to Indiana). Maybe Weber can turn this program around like Ron Zook has for the Fightin Illini Football Team.
