08:19 AM ET 02.24 | Clint Hurdle's recent contract extension is seen as a sign that it is team President Frank Coonelly and GM Neal Huntington who could be the fall guys if the Pirates have a 21st consecutive losing season. Hurdle is committed through 2014 and has impressed owner Bob Nutting with his relentless positive attitude

First!

February 24, 2013  08:50 AM ET

The team owner has already said that the extension doesn't mean Clint isn't on the hot seat. If the Pirates don't win they're all on the hot seat!

The last two years the Bucs have faded away in August, so I think they are need of some veteran pitching help to help them over the top. If the owner thinks they are going to win the division this year he needs to clean house before the season even starts.

I know its just Spring Training but is anyone like me and just excited to see Baseball again?

Lets see now. The lowest payroll in MLB. Hmmmm? I think it is the owner who should be on the hot seat. Only addition of note is Russell Martin? Really? Mendoza Martin? Isn't this all like giving a kid a quarter, sending him to the store and telling him to buy himself something nice?

And the Pirates have done a nice job of building the team from nothing. They've improved, their collapses the last couple of seasons notwithstanding. Taillon and Cole in the minors, Cutch and Alvarez and Walker in the lineup...third place this year with a winning record.

Nothing? really? Since 2005 the Pirates have received luxury tax money of between 10-20 million each year. With the media split and 60-40 attendace split they have ADMITTED to profits of around $20 million each of those years. That is AFTER claiming every loophole out there and all bills/salaries paid. IN 2009 they dumped some of their best players because they said they could nor afford to keep them? That $160 million profit , admitted to, for the last eight years? Where did that go to? The owners pocket, that is where.

No sympathy for the Pirates. None. Why should other teams support them if they just pocket that money?

"We can understand 20 losing seasons in a row. Hell, everyone goes through that. But heads will roll if we go 21. That's inexcusable!!!"

They have been picking at the top of the draft long enough, where they should have been able to build a contending team by now. Tampa did it with weaker fan base and hell hole of a stadium. Somebody needs to be held accountable for this once proud franchise turning into a joke.

Accountability? In today's society? You must be joking.

Your probably right, but there should be no reason for this team to be bad every year. They have a great fan base, Pittsburgh is a excellent sports town, and their ball park is one of the nicest I have ever been to.

Its uncanny how none of those picks panned out. Something is wrong with their minor league system. There are a pitcher named Tim Alderson who was rated behind Lincecum in the Giants minor league system. The Giants traded him to the Pirates for Freddy Sanchez. Lots of Giants fans howled at that trade. Dude got in the Pirates system and was never heard from again. As highly rated as he was you would think he would crack the major league staff at some point.

Not to mention failing to sign Mark Appel, a player they used the 8th pick in last years draft to grab.

guess hurdle has the owner's support, something that not everybody can get,
in the pirates situation??the manager would be the last one to step down,,but the GM is in a thin ice if you know what i mean!!!!

aside from the GM /manager/the only head in the way is the owner's head and it would be rolling, it wouldn't be a surprise if he fire himself!!!!
