09:14 AM ET 02.24 | The Detroit Red Wings might be moving East when the NHL realigns for the 2013-14 season. According to CBC's Elliotte Friedman, the Red Wings would join a conference that includes Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Boston, Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Florida. Another eight-team conference would include Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington. One seven-team conference would feature Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg. The other seven-team conference would have Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.

The conference with the Wings made sense until they threw in Tampa and Florida. Why not put in the Isles and the Rags and put them in with the other eastern conference?

because tampa and florida rely on having premier north east teams coming to town regularly. and because the southeast sucks. they need some balance.

I like the idea of the Wings in the East as they are in the EST. And putting the Yotes with all those GWN teams might help attendence as a half Million Canadiens cruise to AZ every winter.

The whole idea about realignment is for the fans who can watch their team play most of their games in the time zone they live in.

I'd rather see the Rangers lumped in with Boston, Montreal, Detroit etc and give Tampa their slot in the other division.Doesn't matter what they do, someone is not going to be happy.

I just looked at the Eastern proposal...

Really?

Wonder who drew that up?

Orrr... Northeast- Buffalo, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto / Atlantic-NJ, NYI, NYR, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh / Southeast- Carolina, Florida, Nashville, Tampa, Washington / Central- Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, St Louis / Pacific- Anaheim, Colorado, LA, Phoenix, San Jose / Northwest- Edmonton, Calgary, Minnesota, Vancouver, Winnipeg.....Why is this scenario so elusive ???? Keeps traditional rivalries and creates some new ones....especially the NW with four Canadian based teams and Minnesota and their natural rival in Winnipeg

Yeah for a six division conference this works but for real rivalry having the teams play their way out of their division is the way to go and that means 4 divisions. But what division are they going to put the expansion franchises in Southern Ontario and QC (you know they'll use the excuse "well we just wanted to make the divisions even")
