Mack Brown explains switch back to wide-open offense

09:31 AM ET 02.24 | In explaining the switch to a turbo-charged offensive pace, Texas coach Mack Brown pointed to Oregon's accomplishments and lauded Oklahoma State. Despite the comparisons, Brown insisted that Texas would still be Texas -- whatever that means. "We don't want to be anybody else. We want to be us," Brown said as spring practice started this week. "And I feel like we can do that." In 15 practices, new offensive play-caller Major Applewhite must implement the system for a pivotal 2013 season. As Longhorns fans know all too well, Texas is 22-16 the last three seasons. With 19 starters returning from a 9-4 team that beat Oregon State in the Valero Alamo Bowl, hope is alive of a return to Big 12 and national contention. Brown has even publicly pointed to 2013 as a year for real progress, although he refused to put any special emphasis on it Thursday.

X's and O's, Jimmies and Joes. What Mack needs is another Vince Young to run whatever offense the 'Horns are going to run in '13.

Another VY would help, but what Mack really needs to do, is keep players like Luck and Manziel in Austin!!!

Actually, there were quite a few good Texas High School QBs, besides Luck and Manziel, to come out of Texas that didn't play for the Longhorns!! Foles, Ponder, Mallet, Dalton, Stafford, Kolb, Flynn, McElroy and Brees!!! That is quite impressive!!! Did Mack even try to recruit, any of these guys???

Guess that means another 22-16 over the next 3 seasons. But since they still make the $ with Mack, they keep him.

Well, you can't get them all with scholarship limits. The Horns had a good run with Applewhite-Young-McCoy (Chris Simms never really panned out, but his senior year was OK) and then hit a dry spell starting with Garrett Gilbert. I don't think Luck ever wanted to go to UT, and Griffin would not have started over McCoy - or so he would have thought at the time. The last three years have been mediocre by UT's standards, in terms of recruiting. The Aggies have a leg up for now.
