Daytona crash exposes risks to NASCAR spectators

10:08 AM ET 02.24 | The risks of racing extend beyond the drivers. Fans can wind up in the danger zone, too. A horrifying crash on the last lap of a race at Daytona International Speedway injured at least 30 fans Saturday and provided another stark reminder of what can happen when a car going nearly 200 mph is suddenly launched toward the spectator areas. The victims were sprayed with large chunks of debris - including a tire - after rookie Kyle Larson's machine careened into the fencing that is designed to protect the massive grandstands lining NASCAR's most famous track. "I love the sport," said Shannan Devine, who witnessed the carnage from her 19th-row seat, about 250 feet away. "But no one wants to get hurt over it." The fencing served its primary purpose, catapulting what was left of Larson's car back onto the track. But it didn't keep potentially lethal shards from flying into the stands.

Here's to hoping that everyone ends up being OK.
Aside from all of the other issues that this crash raises, I have to believe that the car's front clip falling off and ejecting the engine is not what the engineers who developed the new GEN6 car had in mind.
Crush zones specifically engineered to absorb energy are good, but not at the expense of having the vehicle spraying large parts all over the place at 200mph.

at what point do they just drop daytona and talledega from the schedule? or make them rebuild the tracks smaller? its such a joke the teams think little enough of it where a winner cant even get a full time ride, its just a coin toss... And there is no way to make it decent... i feel like a roman going to the colosieum today

Didn't even think about that. I've never seen a COT come apart that bad before and I've seen a few hellacious wrecks in the last few years at the high speed tracks.

I hope and pray for the fans that got hurt yesterday. But watching sports is a risk because you can get hit by a ball a pucks and raceing car parts.I use to work the pits at MIS back in the 90's as an EMT.
HAIL TO THE VICTORS!

ive been to dega 15 times, i love it... but its not even a race and there is no other track where at speed the entire field is separated by 3 seconds.... its a death trap, every race i watch I say when its over "someone else is gonna die", they need to take them off the schedule...

Dega hasn't had a death since Tiny Lund back in 1975.. Daytona since Earnhardt since 2001.. I don't like the plate racing either.. but it is what it is

its not even a race and the danger is atleast doubled.... trevor won it and it dosent even mean enough to give him a full time ride.... just let it go

Didn't start it.. but you went off saying that drivers die at these 2 tracks when they don't.. more likely to die in practice at tracks than in the race itself

this isnt really about the drivers.... until another dies... right now its about the fan accidents... and its not even a race, there is no reason for nascar to do a plate track, its not even a race

As fans.. you take a risk at ANY sporting event you go to.. baseball its foul balls and broken bats.. hockey its the puck flying into the stands and the occassional broken pane of glass along the boards.. car races its the debris into the stands.. its all a risk when you go..
Like I said I don't like plate racing.. wish there was another way to slow these cars down or break up the packs of cars.. but Nascar did that very thing and fans complained.. can't have it both ways right now

your first comment was still well said......even though NW is still COT...the Gen 6 will be looked at for similar potential front splitting.
