Browns to give Brandon Weeden second chance

10:24 AM ET 02.24 | Browns CEO Joe Banner revealed Saturday he doesn't expect to draft a quarterback with the No. 6 overall pick, and that the club is prepared to give Brandon Weeden a chance to show just how much he wants the starting job. "It's not the focus of our thinking," Banner said of taking a QB with the team's first pick. "I think [that's] kind of a way to be helpful without getting too specific. But at the same time you can't have too many good quarterbacks. They're valuable assets. In Philadelphia we were very successful in, if we had more than one, getting great value for the more than one." Question is, can Banner be believed during the NFL's fibbing season?

The fact that no QB in the draft is worth taking at the 6th pick also played into this decision.

Exactly, now ask him if so and so is around in the second round, you gonna pass him by again? No way that happens.

The Browns don't have a second rounder this year because they took Gordon in the supplemental last summer. I expect them to bring in competition but not in the draft unless someone really knocks their socks off in the 3rd.
They have too many holes on D so look for them to take guys on that side of the ball with both their 1st and 3rd rounders.

Neither Smith or Foles will command a 1st round pick. I highly doubt any team is going to offer anything higher than a 3rd rounder for Smith and 4th for Foles.
I think that Smith is a solid QB but I question whether teams will pony up for him or just call the Niners bluff and wait until April where he is owed a LOT of $ forcing them to cut him so they are not stuck with his contract.

What cracks me up is that most Browns fans want to dump this guy right now. Most QB's don't just come into the league and light it up right away like we've seen the last two years. Like Banner said, most guys show improvement from their first year to their second. So cutting him now could be making a really bad decision.

The thing is Weeden will be entering his 2nd year and Alex Smith will be entering his 9th year and Alex Smith is a year younger than Weeden. By the time Weeden catches on it will be time for him to retire.
If Cleveland is serious about ever becoming a contender again it would be in their best interest to Trade for Alex Smith, and build their team through Free Agency with $48 million in Cap Room.

Other teams have already made bids for Smith and one of those teams was probably Cleveland. The 49ers are not going to look at only a 3rd round pick. Just because Cleveland does not have 2nd round pick in 2013, teams can trade picks for 2014, 2015.
Why does trading for Smith make more sense than waiting for Smith to possibly become a free agent? Trading is not going to cost a team as much money, they trade for his contract, plus it guarantees that your team gets the prize. Think back to last year and all the teams that spent time and money trying to entice Peyton Manning, Mannings agent Tom Condon ( who is Alex Smiths agent ) kept dangling Manning out there long enough till Denver decided to dump a load of money on Mannings lap. I would also trust that Jim Harbaugh knows something about QB's and if he says that Alex Smith has been playing some of the best ball of his career over the last 2 years I would think other teams would trust Harbaughs word concerning QB'. Harbaugh recruited Andrew Luck, and tried to get RGIII.
The final argument for trading for Smith is because Clevelands current Offensive Coordinator Norv Turner worked with Smith for one year before Turner bolted for the Chargers Head Coaching job, so they know each other.

Most players that start during their Rookie year have what they call a Sophomore Slump in their second year. THis is due to a combination of reasons.

Teams covet their draft picks and even though Smith has has success in recent years, his track record before Harbaugh got there was not good.
I believe its the system that helped Alex and there are a lot of teams that also think this. IMO, I believe that calling the Niners bluff is the best thing for teams to do. If he commands anything higher than a 3rd round pick I'll be surprised.

Some do but it all depends on the player. And some have great sophomore years after bad rookie years! Both Mannings and Flacco followed up sub par rookie years with great sophomore years.

Weeden had similar numbers as Peyton Manning as a rookie so why not let him start?

Not for a 1, narrator... Maybe a couple of 3's but that's about it.

In fact, he set a Browns rookie passing record. In an offense that wasn't suited for him. With average (at best) receivers.

Exactly. And as someone pointed out in another thread, the Niners have cap room issues and Smith is an expensive backup. If they can't find someone to overpay for him they will likely just release him and his large salary.

Mangler.

Trade Weeden and their number 3 for Smith. Use FA to shore up the defense, and the remainder of the draft to get Smith some weapons. There are some sleeper receivers out there than can be had in the lower half of the draft.

Not a lot of qb talent out there. Weeds isn't totally the blame for the dismal passing game. The guys that are suppose to catch the ball just seem to fail far too often. He wasn't a first round talent last year and there are no can't miss qb's in this draft. He should be safe for this year but they better get some receivers that actually catch the ball.
