09:43 AM ET 02.24 | Former LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery said at the NFL Combine that he went pro to help support his family. He may also be doing it help pay off his future bets. Montgomery and fellow LSU end Barkevious Mingo have a $5,000 bet to see who gets taken first in the 2013 NFL Draft. For the Tigers duo, it's just the latest bet, Montgomery said at the combine on Saturday. "We had three bets going on. We had one for the highest (amount) of sacks for $1,000. I won that," Montgomery said. "We had one for $500 for the most sacks in the last game. I won that. Now we're fighting (to see) who goes highest in the draft. "That amount of money is pretty big, so I have to come through with this one."

A lot of these players coming out of college and getting their first taste of money have to many family members, bad advisors with their money, and at the end of their playing days a lot of them are broke.

Where were these players getting that kind of mad money for regular-season bets while still college student-athletes?

Is it legal for a college football player to bet on a game or his accomplishments during "any" college football game??? Just asking if the NCAA allows this!!! :-)

Excellent question, OT. Montgomery just opened a can of worms with his comments. But, he can always retract and say it never happened. Difficult to prove unless money/paper trail can be followed.

Yeah, it would be difficult to prove without a paper trail, but what does anyone do with $1,000 dollars that they won from a bet. Don't they either spend it, put it in the bank or bury it in the backyard?? :-)

$1,000 in college with the current "Big Money" type culture? They would probably just keep 1/2 on them and an the other 1/2 in their room somewhere.

When will these guys wise up and invest their money so as they don't have to work (hard) after they retire?

Note that Charles Barkely and Chuck Person's little brother had a $5000 bet (after Person was drafted by the Suns) on a game of horse. Person won.

Yeah, but is gambling on a player's accomplishments in college football legal, as far as the NCAA is concerned???

I'm no LSU fan, but I don't see an issue here for LSU. It's not like these guys were betting in Vegas on the outcome of an LSU game. They were simply betting on their performances in a game.
No question as to whether these two will get drafted. There's no doubt about that, it's just a question of when.

wiseup: I smell a NCAA investigation. They could possibly consider players earning income for their performance on field at college level. these LSU players may have opened a can of worms. If NCAA gets involved and finds this to be a violation, If head coach knew this wasa going on it could cost him his job. See Ohio State tatoo scandal. Selling memorabia to buy tatoos. Apparently Tressel knew this was going on and was fired for not reporting it.

Slow news day?
I'm just glad nobody tried to cry bounty yet. I hope I didn't just jinx it! Lol but seriously...
Nobody said Mingo had already paid off the 1st 2 bets. Just which one of them had won. It's very likely that they would let it go until after the draft and if Mingo goes 1st Montgomery would give him the $3500 to square things up. Guys have friendly prop bets on things to keep score with each other. When did we all become so PC and stop being cool? I think it's awesome that a kid likely to sign for the Rookie max still considers $5000 to be a "pretty big" amount of $. Sounds like he's got his head screwed on right.
