Why Indians must trade Sabathia

If the Mets complete their trade for Minnesota's Johan Santana, they might as well buy some cold drinks to wash down the chips because there's no way C.C. Sabathia will be an Indian after the 2008 season. If the Mets land Santana, it means they've agreed to a five- to six-year deal that could be worth between $130 million and $150 million. The Indians are not going to give Sabathia a contract for that much money or that many years. But it's just the kind of contract Legacy Sports, Sabathia's representatives, will consider relevant.

ok, someone at the Plain Dealer needs to lay of the weed. They do not NEED to trade him.

after watching Sabathia in the playoffs they shouldnt give him that much money even if they found it in a cookie jar. The guy completely collapsed and isnt worth that much money anyway.

February 1, 2008  07:39 AM ET

ya right! The Indians will not trade C.C., because he is really young talent my advice dont trade him.

February 1, 2008  07:51 AM ET

Whalers, Couldn't agree more, that was my first thought reading the headlines. Get into the playoffs this year, and pitch like Beckett....well then this might be a relevant discussion.

February 1, 2008  07:52 AM ET

Oh...and who would give a 5-6 year deal to a pitcher that weights 3 bills.

February 1, 2008  07:58 AM ET

Sabathia is no where near Santana's talent anyway. Is he a top-tier pitcher? Heck yeah. Is he Santana's equal, no way. He shouldn't get close to Santana money. (Granted, I think that Santana shouldn't get "Santana money" and I'm a Twins fan. I mean, $80 mil over 4 years is hardly chump change... Why was that such a bad deal for him again?)

February 1, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Umm... As a Tigers fan, I fully support any decision by the Tribe to trade CC... HA!

February 1, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Hummm...CC and Beckett.....hummm....

February 1, 2008  08:26 AM ET

The buble is about to burst, the US is in the start of a depression not recession. I wonder how much longer these inflated sarleries will last.

I see the Yankees going after CC to replace Pettitte next season. I don't think that he will get a Santana type of contract unless he has some crazy year, which players in their contract year usually do.

Heck the Mets still haven't sign Santana yet, they have until 5pm est.

February 1, 2008  08:29 AM ET

I Agree take all of those power house pitchers out of the American League Central besides the 5 starting pitchers for the Tigers of course

February 1, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Sabathia if moved will probably get decent cash, but I wouldnt expect last year Zito money or probable this year Santana money. He could definitely help bolster a starting 5 though. Plus the guys a work horse... Pay him to eat up innings if nothing else.. Innings and cake.. lots and lots of cake

February 1, 2008  09:23 AM ET

If he has another good season he is going to want the $18 mil per like Zito. I don't think many teams would want to give him 7 years though. The Yanks will definitely be interested. They pay Pettitte $16 mil now, whats another $2 mil per to replace him with Sabathia.

February 1, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Bigsocks, that's a bad deal for Santana sinply for th fact that he can get a longer deal with more money annually.

You had already excluded four of the five Tigers when you mentioned "powerhouse pitchers." Take Sabathia out of the Indians' rotation and it's still better than the Tigers.

February 1, 2008  09:42 AM ET

If that is the cost of a #1 then teams should just get used to it, and pay.

February 1, 2008  09:47 AM ET

They need to either sign CC, or trade him, just don't let him go in free agency and not get anything for him.

February 1, 2008  09:55 AM ET

SlinkyRedfoot-
What are you smoking- Carmona is not going to sustain this year and very few of your guys can go over 200+ innings like most of Detroits. Not that the indians pitchers will last more than 2 innings against that tigs line-up... Keep playing with you slinkys in Cleveland. Last year was just that... Last year. I would just wait and see...

February 1, 2008  10:03 AM ET

does anyone remember Sabathia vs Red Sox? he should RUN to the weak NL

February 1, 2008  10:19 AM ET

tiger4life, you must be breathing too much of that dirtyass Detroit air.

<<few of your guys can go over 200+ innings like most of Detroits. Not that the indians pitchers will last more than 2 innings>>

Last year, oly two of the Tigers 5 starters went over 200 innings. Willis with 205.1 and Verlander with 201.2. CC and Carmona? 241 and 215. The five Tigers' starters averaged 164 innings each last year while the Tribe's five averaged 170. You should look things up before you blurt them out.

Rogers is old and sucks. WIllis is young and sucks worse.

Now go wash Jim Tressel's sweater vest.

Big pitchers, like CC like Bartolo, like Wells, have the tendency to have injury issues. Anyone signing him to more than four or five years is taking a gamble in my book. He's no doubt a talent and a great innings eater, but CC will, mark my words, will have injury problems in the next few years.

Santana Money is not warranted. He's not a perennial Cy Young winner. Unless he gets in better shape I wouldn't even give him Zito money.
