NBA debating fine for Mark Cuban's 'Kobe' comment

08:10 AM ET 02.25 | Mavericks owner Mark Cuban loves to poke and prod the Lakers. Witness his Kobe Bryant "amnesty" comments a few days ago. But Cuban said it hasn't been as entertaining to zing the Lakers since former coach Phil Jackson and, yes, Shaquille O'Neal left. "It's nowhere near as fun. They would always take the bait," Cuban said Sunday. Of course, that was before Bryant wrote "Amnesty THAT" on Twitter after ripping through Dallas for 38 points in the Lakers' 103-99 victory Sunday. The NBA is debating whether to fine Cuban for saying Friday that the Lakers should consider waiving Bryant next season via the one-time amnesty provision. The Lakers would still have to pay Bryant his $30.5-million salary next season but would save the corresponding amount, if not slightly more, in luxury taxes. Bryant, by the way, said he was "very appreciative" of the way the Lakers spent money on player payroll in recent seasons, trying to surround him with enough talent to get his sixth championship.

Wait...do you get up to go to work happy and jovial and full of joy every single day? And would you through injuries, not seeing your family, tons of pressure on you, and for 17 years? Do you have any clue how hard playing in the NBA at a high level is? It **looks** easy, but is by far mor taxing than what most of us do for a living. These guys need all the motivation they can get, because otherwise, those who aren't easily motivated do not last long. Especially when money was their only motivation. It just reminds me of when Kim K was on Kris Humphries back about working during the NBA lockout....because she thinks what they do is easy and players didn't enjoy a short break for once. It's a life that cannot be put into words man....just sayin...

You say that, but what would happen if the Knicks felt the same way about Melo? In that if he does not bring them a championship this year, which has been their best in over a decade, that what he is getting paid hinders them from being financially flexible to sign other players? Or let's go back to the Patrick Ewing days....same scenario! Why would a franchise that is built around a player that means more than just money to them just cut him and let him go? Do you know how idiotic the Lakers or any team would look for doing that?! That would in a sense say two things. You are saying you made a mistake in paying them before the CBA, and you are willing to do anything for the sake of money....so loyalty, the fans, nothing matters but money. I understand Cuban's take as an owner and being hypothetical, because that is his job, but sooo many fans jumped on it simply because it was a way at taking yet another shot at Kobe. The idea is dumb, and shouldn't be what teams have to do to manage themselves. Just ask Memphis, who did virtually the same thing and now they have 0 chance at winning anything this year or next with the Rudy Gay debacle. Claiming you can't pay a player because of a contract YOU gave him....dumb sh&&!! If Kobe was an injured, ineffective, not wanting to retire player, then I would understand, but just based on how much money he makes is ignorant and proof that the CBA put fear in these owners for mis-managing for so many years!

Sorry, but Cuban is right.
Kobe is not worth 30m next season...he is not worth it now.
They are a 9th place team that is struggling to make the playoffs. Even LeBron, making less, with less talent, got Cleveland to the playoffs...and I can name many other super stars who carried their teams.
I am not saying Kobe is at fault, he is just not worth that money.
The Lakers should amnesty him. Because his cap savings would save them another 45m in taxes on his salary alone!!
They might have the dough, but 75m (30m to Kobe +45m in taxes on his salary) is not remotely worth it!!!
