Coach's challenge coming to hockey?

12:43 PM ET 02.25 | The NHL Board of Governors will be meeting in March and will likely discuss changes to the video review procedures for the league. While any proposed changes were shot down three years ago, support has grown for some sort of solution to the problem of officiating not able to keep up with the speed of the sport. One possible solution? A coach's challenge, to be used during the course of a game on any goal-scoring plays that come into question.

All scoring plays get reviewed anyway. How would a coach's challenge on a scoring play benefit the game?

If it works for the NFL (and they have like 25 referees out there), it should work for the NHL. Some of the calls are just brutal and should be challengeable.

You're right. Even simple calls like off-sides sometimes change the outcome of a game. Now, I'm not condemning all officials. It's a fast game, the fastest of any, and frankly I'm not surprised that there are missed calls. I'm surprised there aren't more of them.

They only review if the goal is good. If a coach thinks an offsides was missed prior to the goal being scored, he could challenge that.

It should be for ANY play...the possibilities are endless...the off-side goal last week would be a prime example of when to throw the challenge flag.

Exactly. Leadup to a scoring play should be challenge-able. But, also like the NFL, penalties and icing and whatever else should not be.

It should be something other than a flag. Maybe a water bottle or the bench. Something more dramatic than a flag.

Yeah, Homer should have about 20 more goals to his credit. However, the goal review, as described here, would not be on penalties and would still be at the ref's discretion. If the ref says goalie interference, Homer still doesn't get his goal even with an available challenge.

by all means lets create another reason to stop play for an extended period of time because of one badly blown call.

If the challenge is no good I heard they lose their time out, Detroit announcers were saying. What good is that.

I could see coaches using a bogus challenge after a key icing.

...if the challenge extends further than scoring plays only.

A delay of game penalty would be a better way to curb challenges.

1 challenge flag to dispute a badly blown call from a ref is a bad thing ??

The full story actually did say that penalties might be reviewed (like goalie interference). But where do you draw the line on penalties? Away from the play? Does "let'em play" not apply on a replay? Do they call it by the book then? Probably multiple penalties occur around the time when most goals are scored- someone was being held, interfered, hooked, cross-checked. This seems murky as hell.
Regardless if it happens definitely only one per coach per game, otherwise welcome to 6 hr games with all the TV time outs already.
