12:55 PM ET 02.25 | The Washington Capitals have signed goaltender Braden Holtby to a two-year contract extension, with the team having settled on the young netminder as the starter in goal for the time being. Holtby and Michael Neuvirth, both set to become RFAs this summer, have struggled to start the season as the Capitals fight to pull out of the basement of the Eastern Conference. On the season, Holtby has a 3.37 goals-against average and .896 save percentage; for his career, Holtby has collected a 2.51 GAA and .916 save percentage in 32 games overall.

I think it's a good move. While not a great start this year, it's not entirely his fault. The team has been playing poorly in front of him and putting themselves in a hole constantly with stupid penalties (5 in the third period alone in NJ last Thursday). Their shot at making the playoffs this year is marginal at best. But I think Holtby has a great career in front of him. His career numbers (admittedly very small number of games) aren't bad at all and he's still a young guy.

nothing says <you deserve a raise> quite like being one spot removed from the cellar (and playing in a horrible division, on top of it).

It's the correct move for sure. Slappy - if the Caps go 3 for 3 this week they will be pretty uch even with Carolna and Tampa. Still a lot of hockey to play. Remember how the Caps fans cried wolf two months before the ed of the regular season last year? They have plenty of time and opportunites
