05:59 PM ET 02.25 | The Washington Capitals have extended the contract of defenseman John Erskine on Monday morning, according to an announcement by general manager George McPhee on the club's official website. Erskine was playing in the final year of a two-year, $3 million contract and would have been an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the year. Now, Erskine is signed through the 2014-15 season, earning $1.9 million in the first year and $2 million in the second year. The contract will carry an annual average value of $1.95 million. In 424 career regular season games in the NHL, Erskine has compiled 11 goals, 33 assists, 44 points and 775 penalty minutes.
