08:04 AM ET 02.26 | Coming out of the combine weekend, Green Bay has some decisions to make. Searching for salary-cap space to extend their two best players, [the Packers] haven't approached the agent for linebacker A.J. Hawk about a pay cut but probably will do so before long. Mike McCartney, the longtime agent for Hawk, said he planned to discuss that looming possibility in a face-to-face meeting with his client this week. "A.J. and I haven't broached that subject yet," McCartney said at the National Football League scouting combine. "We really haven't. But we will." ... If the Packers released Hawk, they would gain $5.45M against the '13 cap by eliminating his $4.9M base salary, $300,000 per-game roster bonus and $250,000 workout bonus.

I think the Pack did too, once they signed Clay Matthews.

This happens every year with Hawk. His production on the field never matches his salary, and he's always involved in trade rumors. Somehow he always manages to stay on the team, and he'll probably do it again this year.
And by the way, I wish someone would pay me $200,000 to work out.

Have any tandem of LB's in the same draft class spared us to death more than A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter from tOSU?

Easy to do when he never is featured in any highlight films.

That defense was awful. Why keep it together. Maybe they looked at the film and realized he was part of the problem?

Hawk has always been "generally satisfactory". He has never come close to playing to the level of his draft position. The Pack can get similar production for much less money.

I think Hawk will take a pay cut to stay in Green bay, he's solid against the run.

Few people could step up and disappoint to the level AJ has. As mentioned, Bobby Carpenter has. Manti could very well be another.

Exactly! Hawk has had a pretty decent career for a 3rd round pick. Unfortunately, he was the 5th pick in the draft. Still, others have failed worse. While he is a competent LB and could fill a hole in 2013, he certainly isn't worth spending $5M on. If he were on the open market, I can't imagine a team offering him anywhere near that.

I don't see Green Bay giving him that kind of money, but I could be wrong!
