Whispers of a side deal for Brady

08:07 AM ET 02.26 | Simple math offers that Tom Brady took less to help the Patriots. Still, teams and agents are looking at the numbers and wonder what else could be going on. Whispers of a side deals already have begun in league circles, even though there is (and likely will be) no proof of a wink-nod arrangement that will see Brady get compensated in other ways. Sides deals aren't unprecedented in pro football. ... At a minimum, agent Don Yee has provided his competitors with more than enough ammunition for the inherently cutthroat game of chasing new clients. At a maximum, teams and agents will probe for something/anything to explain why Tom Brady was willing to sign a contract that pays him so much less than he'll be worth starting two years from now.

It wouldn't matter how much his contract is for because it would still pale in comparison to what his wife makes.

What I'm thinking is that it's a "slot deal," with the freed-up cap space earmarked for a deal with Welker.
Remember, Tom's wife makes more than he does. They don't need the money.

Seriously? Can't the guy just be doing a good thing to help his team out? Oh my god no way the haters can stand Brady being unselfish. Just another off the field reason Brady is best in the league. Brady isn't about money, he is about winning. More money freed up means better players around him. Kinda makes Brees and other looks a bit selfsh huh?

Maybe he's getting 49% ownership of the Pats in return for a lower contract???

Yeah he did a good thing for his team and not such a bad thing for himself. I mean he just parlayed a guaranteed $10M into a guaranteed $60M and that is pretty damned good math for a 35 year old QB.

The guy has made tons of money already, his wife is rich, I think he can afford a discount for the chance at another ring. But that's not as juicy of a story headline, now is it?

There comes a point in a professional career when you've made more money than you will ever spend. Vince Young hasn't reached that point yet, but Brady has, and now he's thinking more about his professional legacy, and that means championships. What he is doing makes sense for how he wants his place in his sport to be viewed by history.

In no way am I a hater of what Tom Brady has done but there is no way, with this being his last deal that he is taking ONLY $9m per season.
With Brees and Manning both knocking down $20m per season deals in the last year, Tom would be getting the same.
It is def a "wink-wink" deal...but, nothing can be proved and this will pave the way for the Pats to sign more guys.

Sounds like a deal made in Washington, or the back room of an Italian restaurant.

Jeff, I think you are missing the point Tom Brady now has what no other player in the NFL has. Yes he's helping his team and taking a little less upfront but seriously $60Mil guaranteed??? I mean really dude Tom doesn't need the money right now and he's now got his future secured. I don't think that anyone doubts that should Tom bring another Lombardi to Foxborough there'll be a nice little bonus for him, but on the other hand if Tom gets injured in the first game and his career is over he still get's the money.

They can stop looking for reasons: his wife makes more money than he does.

Anyone who thinks he took one for the team is delusional. It is all in the fine print and two years from now the next remake will cover the smoke and mirrors from this deal.

This shake down of the cap rules is nothing. Steve Young is still getting money under the table from DeBartolo from his 49ers days.
