Stanford scrambling to replace career rushing leader

08:23 AM ET 02.26 | It's football season in Palo Alto, and there are questions to be answered. The tight end situation is murky. Sophomore Luke Kaumatule, who played sparingly last season, is the top candidate to fill the void -- and at 260 pounds, he's big enough. ... The search to replace Stepfan Taylor, Stanford's career rushing leader, begins this week. Anthony Wilkerson is expected to be the No. 1 tailback, at least until Tyler Gaffney rejoins the team in April. Gaffney rushed for 449 yards in 2011, then spent one unsuccessful season in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization. Barry Sanders, Remound Wright, Jackson Cummings and Ricky Seale will also compete for playing time.

If Stanford didn't have such high academic standards they could plug-and-play like the football factories. But that's not how they roll.

Dr, I agree!!! By the way, I was watching a replay of the famous 1982 Cal and Stanford game the other day. I had forgotten that John Elway was the QB of Stanford that day and Gale Gilbert for Cal!!!

Good point, but I say that Stanford has done pretty well with bringing in the football players!!! They have only lost (excluding bowl games) 4 football games the last 3 years and two of them have been to Oregon!! That's not too shabby, for a "college with an high academic standards"!!!!!!!

Just think how good they could be if they lowered their standards! Then they could carpet bomb for recruits and cycle 25% more players through the program ... utilizing modern roster management techniques. But that's not how they roll.

I'm hoping to get a look at Sanders, see if he is as good as his father.
