Jones: Ryan's defense was too complicated

02:36 PM ET 02.26 | Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after the 2012 season, in which the team compiled an 8-8 record. But despite the record and drop to 19th in the NFL's total defense rankings, Jones says it wasn't necessarily on-field performance that led to the decision. Jones felt Ryan's defense was just too complicated, saying "Where we fundamentally came down with Rob is that his philosophy is about multiple scheme. I think you have to skinny it down." To replace Ryan, Jones hired Monte Kiffin, who brings a much simpler 4-3 defense in his Tampa 2 scheme.

In this case, Jerry was right...
Waaaay to often there were players running all over the field trying to get in the right spot.
The team saw an improvement in yards allowed but a big decline in sacks and turnovers.
Rob Ryan stunk and needed to go.
He was not the sole reason, just one of them.

Rob, your scheme just has too many X's, and not enough O's. Either fix that, or you're gone...

The Cowboys pretty much let the other team score whenever they needed to. What's so complicated about that?

Yep, but at least Jerry and the players will understand that when it happens.

JJ's old school: just tackle the guy with the ball. That's defensive scheming.

Rob Ryan did the smart thing going to New Orleans, he takes over one of the worse defenses in the NFL , thus setting the bar very low as far as improvement.
