Trading for Alex Smith would cost Cardinals up to $20 million

07:55 PM ET 02.26 | Another team has entered the sweepstakes to land embattled San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, as the Cardinals have showed an interest in Smith and will pursue a trade that would land him in Arizona. Smith is a fit for the Cardinals, but as Somers points out later in his article, Arizona is looking at all their options and are not going to zero in on Smith as their only option moving forward. Many draft experts have been penciling in quarterbacks Tyler Wilson and Matt Barkley at No. 7 overall in their mocks but it's beginning to look like the Cardinals are going to look at upgrading their offensive line instead. Free agency isn't going to be their friend when it comes to finding a replacement for Kevin Kolb, which means the Cardinals will likely pursue a trade for Smith if they look at current NFL quarterbacks. However, trading for Smith complicates Arizona's salary cap situation; the Cardinals would have to pay Kolb $6 million if they parted ways with him or $9 million if they keep him.

Sad to see the Cardinals reaching for yet another QB. Smith having Fitz to throw too will be curious as hell.

SF is not gonna trade Smith to a division rival unless they give SF the farm to get him. And, thar is highly unlikely to happen!!!

I'm not sure Harbaugh respects Smith's ability enough to worry about the division rival thing.

Gotta have a QB. Not sure Smith is a sure thing at QB.

Maybe, but does SF really want to find out the hard way and have it come back to bite 'em in the assets!

Upgrade Kolb to Smith for $20M? I don't know if I would do that....

I think he does

I'm not sure Smith is even an upgrade over Kolb. I said this on a thread yesterday, but their best path would be to keep Kolb and work on improving the O-line. There is enough skill there on offense to be effective if the O-line isn't high school caliber.

Agreed. Kolb would be fine if he weren't running for his life or flat on his back. O-line has to be AZ's priority.

Sounds like Smith is going to Kansas City. I'm happy to hear that, as it probably helps save the Cardinals from doing something stupid.
