07:59 AM ET 02.27 | An early November game between UTEP and Texas A&M has grown infinitely more interesting thanks to ex-Aggies backup quarterback Jameill Showers. [Showers] announced Tuesday night his new college of choice: UTEP. "Through it all, I'm still proud to call A&M my school," Showers posted on his Twitter page. "But it's time to start a new chapter in my life. I'm happy to say...I'm a UTEP Miner!" Showers served as then-senior Ryan Tannehill's backup in 2011 and then engaged Johnny Manziel in a spirited tussle for the starting gig deep into last August. All Manziel did was become the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy while Showers, as expected, mostly looked sharp and poised in his rare appearances in following up Manziel.

How is this going to make this November's game more interesting? Doesn't Showers have to sit out a year first?

I dont' understand the concept of sitting out a year. I would want to go D2 and at least get to play.

Of course, I never had to worry about it playing D2 tennis. I don't think the NCAA even noticed that it was really a sport.

This kid is good. He can really spin the ball. Congratulations Deep Creek - your miners got a good one!

It's the smart thing to do, but if it happened at Alabama, people would say Saban is making room on the roster, heh heh heh.

With Matt Davis and Kenny Hill coming on there was a logjam of talent at QB. Showers was destined to wait for Manziel to get hurt while A&M put their efforts into developing Davis and Hill as QBs of the future.

When you have a freshman/rs freshman starting and you're a sophomore, the writing is on the wall. The absolute best you can hope for is if he leaves early which is dependent on injuries and other things.

Just hope they can assemble some good ones around him or he'll be running for his life all the time.

Maybe this is one of those deals where he has already graduated, and utep has a course a&m doesn't, so he can play right away.

In this case, no. He's going to finish his degree in June, start grad school at UTEP. He can play right away. Kind of like what Russell Wilson did.

Showers will be able to play this season because he will have graduated with eligability left. Good luck Mr. Showers in your quest...we have you to thank for pushing Johnny.

A guy from my high school had the dubious distinction of being Dan Marino's backup at Pitt. He did have a shot with the Browns, though.
