08:02 AM ET 02.27 | Perhaps one positive development during the lockout was the pause in injuries, particularly concussions. The first few weeks of the shortened 48-game season passed without much talk of concussions. But in the past two weeks, 11 N.H.L. players are believed to have sustained them, among them Crosby's teammate and the reigning most valuable player, Evgeni Malkin, thrusting the issue of head injuries back into the spotlight. Concussions continue to plague the league, despite its increased emphasis on reducing them. This is the second season that the N.H.L. is playing under its broadened version of Rule 48, which penalizes hits that target an opponent's head or make the head the principal point of contact.

Shanahan hasn't done his job properly. Not blaming all concussions on headshots, but he's been lax where he needs to be vigilant.

And he is getting as inconsistent as the league eve was.

Malkin's was not the result of a hit to the head from another player but slamming into the boards. Is anyone suggesting the player that checked Malkin behind the net should be penalized for a legal hit just b/c Malkin slide into the boards afterwards and got consussed???

I hope not!!!

Well I can't find much humour in the serious business of concussions.

Although you can hide your own Easter Eggs.

Man I hope so:). They fly off the shelves themselves.

speed has picked up exponentially with the "lack" of hooking, clutching and grabbing. Guys flying around unhindered cant help the concussion #'s.

February 27, 2013  10:34 AM ET

Pretty sure a game played like this one is never going to be concussion free. And once a guy has one he is way morelikely to have another even easier.

Shoulders to the head should never be legislated out, but that body armour on the shoulders and elbows could be. That's a good first step.

Also very true. No red line also assists in this.

It would be a huge step. But, do they have the balls or the common sense to do it?

No, Sid gets all that. Malkin and the rest just get the cupcake stumps.

Giggle.
Serious note though I don't understand why they don't have no touch icing.
