Fasth alters goalie landscape in Anaheim

08:03 AM ET 02.27 | NHL fans may only now be getting to know Viktor Fasth, who on Monday lost his first game in nine starts. Before he became an overnight sensation, [Fasth] wasn't certain he would get anything more than workload scraps when the Ducks were playing back-to-back games. ... Hiller suffered a lower body injury Feb. 8 at Dallas, and Fasth won four more starts on the road to forever alter the goalie rotation and help the Ducks (13-3-1), who enter Wednesday night's home game against Nashville tied for the second-most points in the NHL. "He's come in and worked his rear end off and the guys notice that," Ducks General Manager Bob Murray said. "That's a huge thing. Who wants to get hit with all those pucks in practice?"

Hiller's a UFA next season. They have cap space, but Perry and Getzlaf are both due raises if the Ducks plan to keep them. They'll have a few other RFA's this summer, plus Koivu and Selanne are both also UFAs and who knows what'll happen there, whether they'll stay, are wanted, or replacements are needed. And of course, just how much money do the Ducks have to spend? Despite the hot start, Ducks are still 25th in attendance. Is Samueli happy with running a consistent money-losing operation? Doubt it.

Speaking of back up goalies, what happened to Voukon last night?

February 27, 2013  09:28 AM ET

I think Fasth would be a good fit in Ottawa.

I think Ottawa is ok, as long as Bishop realises his role

I'm not talking about on the ice Spiny. I'd just love to hear the negotiations.

Was it all his fault? Didn't watch the game, but giving up 4 power play goals to the Panthers sounds like a team buckle...

Good news for Ducks fans. Fasth is under contract until 2015. The bad news for Ducks fans is that he already broke the age barrier, i.e. over 30 years old. He played in 69 games last year in Sweden so I am looking for the adrenaline factor to come to an end at some point. I think its a great story but not the answer the Ducks are looking for long term.
