04:15 PM ET 02.27 | Misnomer or not, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby is adamant that 10 is the right number of teams for his conference. While the Big 10 has been linked to several new schools even after adding Rutgers and Maryland to put their conference at 14, Bowlsby seems sure that his conference is okay as is - even if it isn't allowed to have a conference championship game.

???Ten is the right size for us,??? Bowlsby told the Oklahoman. ???Are we oblivious? No, we can???t afford to be. But we are distributing a lot of money. We???re highly-competitive. It hasn???t been distributed to us that larger is better. There is no empirical evidence that larger is better. In some ways, it???s difficult to appear to be doing nothing, when actually we are taking no members by choice.???

It's something he's said quite a few times: He was hired less than a year ago, in May of 2012, but SB Nation counted 12 separate instances when the league head had told media the league wasn't interested in expansion.

For now, at least. I think they're waiting to see how the Maryland/ACC thing works out, and how much $$ they will end up having to pay.

I'm not sure if this is a smart strategy. It seems short-sighted. If the Big 12 is not careful, they may be the next Big East.

In Mandell's latest Mailbag column, it's revealed that Oklahoma has failed to meet preseason expectations more times than any other school/team. Looking at the Sooners' record, I gotta deduce that the expectant are awry.
