04:30 PM ET 02.27 | Virginia is making its presence known on the recruiting trail: the Cavaliers landed Quin Blanding - widely considered the top safety in the nation - Wednesday afternoon.

Last year, Mike London got Taquan Mizzell - one of the nation's top running backs - to sign. And this year's class is already starting off with a bang with Blanding.

Blanding, a five-star recruit from Virginia Beach, is arguably the best player in the class of 2014 to already commit to a school, and is considered the No. 4 player in the country per Rivals. The Hoos only won four games last year, but considering they're bringing in better prospects than the school has ever seen in the past, that might change soon.

Shoulda gone to Alabama. Ask Keenan Allen if he really, truly enjoyed his years at California.

Cal Berkley is one of the most respected institutions of learning in the nation. I wouldn't knock anyone for choosing to go there. Hundreds of applicants with stellar GPA's are turned away each semester.

Then, one year, for no discernable reason, the Cavs were "uncool cool." Prized recruits signed with them in increasing numbers. Before anyone took notice, the team grew competitive. The wakeup call came in the form of a complete buttwhoopin' laid upon their instate rivals. So thorough was their domination of VT, that Beamer actually threw up on the sidelines.
