04:42 PM ET 02.27 | Mark Dantonio's new offensive coordinator was a bit of a surprising choice, although he likely won't do many surprising things on offense.
Just days after Dan Roushar left Michigan State for the New Orleans Saints' running backs job, they bring in Jim Bolland, who has had an interesting few years. Jim Tressel's longtime offensive coordinator at Ohio State - where Dantonio was defensive coordinator - he was let go when Urban Meyer took over. He was at Boston College an an offensive line coach, and had just taken the same job at Purdue under Darrell Hazell in January, and now is at Michigan State. He has a bit of a reputation for being conservative from his time under the milquetoast Tressel - not great news for a team that averaged just 20.0 points per game this year, 110th in the FBS.

Not sure how I feel about this hire. I understand that Tressel called the plays until Fickell took over. That was not a good offense, so I'm not filled with great confidence. Any of you Buckeyes want to help me feel good about this?

Walrus was Bollman's not-so-complimentary nickname while he was at tOSU. I'll be brutally honest with you, DS: you wanted someone to run a base offense that's Old School (AKA "Dave")? You got yourself a perfect fit for Sparty in the guise of Jim Bollman.

Well, I've got to give Dantonio credit for being consistent. He wants to run a ball possession offense to compliment his defense, so in that sense it might work.

I don't wish to deride this Tressel/Bollman play package too much, as they did have a great deal of success with Dave and its varients for the dacade they were at tOSU. But, it's a playbook that's out of fashion, so to speak, especially with Meyer's zone-read brand of offensive football.
That said, it might work well with Sparty, especially now that Dantonio and Bollman are coaching together again. They might make a real juggernaught of a run game with the Dave package.

Dantonio's a real Tressel disciple in that context.

Bottom line great players make great coaches.
Run what ever package you want . . . if you have great players and you coach it well, it will be successful.
