Geno Smith a loser in Alex Smith deal

07:57 AM ET 02.28 | Thanks to Alex Smith, the Chiefs are now theoretically out of the running for a quarterback. Kansas City was one of the teams often linked to West Virginia's Geno Smith. Now that is no longer the case, it opens the door for the top-rated quarterback prospect to fall down the draft board. Could Smith fall to the Buffalo Bills at No. 8 or New York Jets at No. 9? Both AFC East teams are desperate for quarterbacks and would be intrigued with a chance to draft the West Virginia product. No team in the top five has a strong need for a quarterback. The Chiefs, Jaguars, Raiders, Eagles and Lions all have starting options. Once the draft gets to the sixth pick, that's when things get tricky.

If he cares about his career he'll stay away from New York.

If he's drafted by the Jets, he'll be the first player to announce his retirement while standing on the stage at the draft.

And that's not all! Honest Andy's Used Quarterbacks is also your first stop for trade-ups for your draft picks! Plenty of wheeling and dealing involved! Honest Andy needs your picks, and you might just walk out of Honest Andy's Used Quarterbacks on the clock for the NFL draft!

As long as Geno's known he might be the top QB selected in the draft, he's known that it means he'll be going to a crappy team.

This is where teams get stupid and their legacy continues. Geno Smith is the same guy he was a week ago, very shaky from head to toe, and any team that takes his with a top 10 pick will continue to have top ten picks for years.

my first thought exactly....he probably started getting really nervous when one of 3 teams that may have an interest drops out leaving the Jests as a serious threat of drafting him...

Why would the Bills draft Smith? Their new head coach was at Syracuse, and every time they played against him they made him look like a little lost lamb and his own QB outplayed him. Marone knows too much about Smith to take him that high, and most likely not at all.

So in other words, some sanity might be prevailing. There does not appear to be any franchise QB in this year's draft and chasing after someone who won't be your franchise QB will just hurt you.

THE CRAZIEST OF ALL RUMORS: The Oakland Raiders are going to use their #3 pick overall to draft Geno Smith.

Nothing tricky at six. The Browns will not go for a quarterback.

I think Jets fans need to get nervous if Smith drops to Arizona. If so Arizona will draft Smith and that would leave the NYJ's to draft another USC QB Matt Barkley, we know how much NYJ's fans love USC QB's.
Frankly I'd love to see Oakland take Barkley to add to their collection of USC QB's Palmer and Leinart.

IS THERE A TEAM OUT THAT'S WILLING TO GIVE KANSAS CITY 2 / FIRST ROUND DRAFT CHOICES AND AN SECOND ROUND PICK SO THEY CAN DRAFT SMITH #1 OVERALL ? No. There is even the possibility Geno will fall out of the top 10.

If they do - then that Al Davis "death" thing was a massive sham!

That would be rather soap-operaish to pull something like the faked death of... Ooooh, right, the Raiders. Yep, that's probably what happened, then.

The Jags don't need a QB? I'm guessing the writer hasn't been to many Jacksonville games.

The loser in the Alex Smith deal? The 49ers. They should've held out for a first round pick, KC probably would've given it up, if not some other team would have.

It sounds like the 49ers will get 2 second round picks from this deal. With the deal pretty much done people are already saying the deal was a good move for the 49ers.
The purpose of the deal is to do what is good for both teams. That way teams build a trust with one another for future trades. If the 49ers had traded with a team in the NFC they would have demanded at least a 1st round pick.

2 picks potentially in both the 2 rounds for a player that finally showed some game in the last 1.5 years? I say it was a fair trade.
