AP report may not help Miami

08:16 AM ET 02.28 | According to an Associated Press report Wednesday, Nevin Shapiro spent under $200,000 on gifts to Miami athletes, recruits, coaches and others. John Infante, a former compliance officer at Colorado State who writes the popular NCAA Bylaw Blog, doesn't necessarily think Wednesday's news helps UM's case, even though the NCAA's estimate of Shapiro's impermissible gift-giving is far less than what Yahoo! reported in August 2011. "Once you get over $100,000, it's pretty much a lot of money," Infante said. ... "Now, it's really just a matter of how many postseason bans and how many scholarships you are going to lose. Assuming those numbers stay the same, you're still looking at something that looks a lot like the USC case."

Looks NOTHING like the USC case.

Looks a helluva lot worse!

just remember how inept the NCAA is...........

Paul Dee could set us straight. Better exhume him.

Or at least, no better or no worse!!! :-)

Proof? I'll take receipts, bank records, first-hand testimony. Any will do! Haven't seen anything except a hack reporter for Yahoo and an unsubstantiated AP report. Oh, I forgot, Nevin Shapiro offered up his story and of course the NCAA has their sufficient "evidence" that no one else is allowed to see. And we all know the level of integrity THEY operate on.

What a JOKE!

I love how when USC got railroaded, people thought the Yahoo reporters were the best in the biz. But now it's Miami, AGAIN, they are hack reports

THAT'S THE JOKE!! THE NCAA IS A JOKE!!

Miami should get 5X the punishment of USC; unfortunately, they'll get another slap on the wrist and told not to do it again. 3 major violations in 12-15 years and they have yet to get a death penalty... talk about corruption

NO receipts necessary with ncaa, just ask USC. The ONLY real proof of anything was the house that Bush's parents were allowed to live in down in San Diego. And yes, that WAS an "impermissible benefit". So they deserved some sanctions because that alone made Bush ineligible. LOIC strength sanctions were out of line.

ncaa doesn't need no stinkin' actual proof! They have NO "due process" and none of this would likely hold up in a court of law. They seem to make up the rules (or change them) as they go along.

I think ncaa is finally in for a rude awakening. Shades of Paul Dee... Good Luck Miami.

I think ncaa should investigate the modz here on FN for discriminate zapping of comments and images in one's profiles. There was nothing derogatory or indecent with my profile pic or any of the pics in my profile area.

Two year "mod ban" for the guilty parties! heh heh

Preaching to the choir, my man. When Alabama was getting hammered and we were screaming the NCAA was breaking its own rules to "get us", no on cared. They told us to shut up and take our punishment.

Now, they get a conscience.

Bama's perceived arrogance exacerbated their penalties. I don't think that will be the case with Miami. If anything, the NCAA's arrogance will lead to Miami getting a lighter sentence than they should. UM deserves the death penalty

The problem I have with it is not the Yahoo! reporters, it's the lack of institutional control shown by the NCAA.

Emmert should step in and command the death penalty be enforced upon all implicated Miami sports teams. It may or may not stick, but it will foment radical change within the NCAA.

Or offer the, "Take these sanctions or get the death penalty" route. He's seems to like doing that.

HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What happened to the "millions" Shapiro was whaling about from his jail cell. Millions down to $200,000 and recently $170,000 is a BIG difference. Its officially a stink on both sides and it needs to go away.
