Lane Kiffin thinks poor defense hurt Matt Barkley

01:53 PM ET 02.28 | USC quarterback Matt Barkley had a tough year in 2012, and has gone from being a possible top draft pick to possibly sliding out of the first round all together. However, Trojans head coach Lane Kiffin still believes in him, and thinks that the team's poor defensive showing in 2012 hurt the quarterback's draft stock. He said, "If Matt Barkley had the defense that Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer had, Matt Barkley would have won the Heisman Trophy just like they did. He would have had the winning records they had." There may be an element of truth to that, but USC's defense didn't make Barkley throw 15 interceptions last year.

I believe he was helped more by Lee and Woods catching balls, than hurt by the D

Good point. It could have been worse without those two.

LK may soon be using this same logic when asked his opinion about his being fired.

Reporter: Coach, can you tell us what led to getting canned?

LK: Ya know, if I had had the defense Pete Carroll had, I would have won the MNC just like he did. I would have had the winning records he had.

Reporter: For realz, tho, coach...I wasn't kiddin' around....

LK: Neither was I.

Hold, so his opinion is that had he had a better defense, he would have been seen as much better, just like Palmer and Leinart? Last time I checked they both sucked. So I guess the argument really should be that if Leinart and Palmer had the defenses that Barkley did, they would have been evaluated more realistically.

I think the O-line in front of him had more to do with it than the defense.

February 28, 2013  03:28 PM ET

I think coaching had a more detrimental effect... just sayin'. BTW Isn't the headline "Lane Kiffen thinks.." an oxymoron?

Right on the money. Specifically, Holmes. Him being hurt for a good portion of the year had a huge, negative effect on our entire O-line.

Poor defense and poor coaching.

February 28, 2013  04:58 PM ET

I think he hurt the defense in big games by under-performing terribly in pretty much all of them. And without those two monsters on the outside I dont know if they are even .500 this season

Talk about throwing your DAD under the bus, Lame Kitten is such an *&%$

I was thinking the same thing.
His pass protection was poor, which often leads to interceptions, and they didn't open the holes for a run game, particularly in the fourth qtr. when they got gassed.
If his shoulder is alright he should do well in the NFL.

Dad or no dad. Montes D didn't work. Doesn't matter who they are off the field, on the field you have to do your job. Simple as that.

February 28, 2013  07:12 PM ET

Could've, would've, should've... that pretty well sums up Kiff's coaching career so far.

February 28, 2013  09:50 PM ET

The same thing could be said for Jimmy Clausen, four NC's with 3 Heisman's if it just wasn't for that damned Irish D.

Barkley to Dallas in the 3rd round ... if he's still there and if Jerry has any common sense whatsoever.

March 1, 2013  01:43 AM ET

Hey Domers. It appears that Te'o is the whipping boy for ND's poor showing in the NC game. The same thing happened to Troy Smith after the Florida debacle. The fact the ND was undefeated going into that game means nothing now... your getting zero respect! I've been hearing about my Buckeye's shellacking for 7 years now.... but you guys are in the barrel and Te'o is paying the price big time. A few weeks ago he was a Heisman candidate, now he's too slow, half goofy and was pushed around by Alabama's offensive line. Just sayin'

That was how this hit me. Gotta deflect the blame somehow away from himself.. why not that DC who is gone anyway

Couldn't, didn't but should've is more like it.

I thought it was UCLA's defense that hurt Barkley.
