Jeremy Clements' racial slur hurts more than just motor sports

08:00 PM ET 02.28 | NASCAR just isn't popular across the board in America, case in point: you don't see Tom Hanks or Billy Crystal with their faces presses up against the fence at a NASCAR race the way you see them plastered all over your television anytime the Knicks are on ABC. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I understand what it is. I understand that it's something I could never do which is why people who judge it unfairly need to re-examine how they view the sport. It's messy, it's violent and it's fast -- kind of like every other professional sport in the world. But it's that stereotypical undercurrent of what the South used to represent that is hurting the sport's national appeal, and it's stories like this that bury it even further into the ground than it already is. Jeremy Clements isn't helping NASCAR or race relations in this country, he's severely damaging them even if he honestly didn't mean to do so.

QUOTE(#2):

Doesn't matter who you work for, their are times you need to use good judgement on what you are saying. Drinkin beers, playing pool, eating pizza with the buds you can be a dumb as you want. When you are making the big bucks!, playing with the big dogs you got to use the brain. This guy may have slipped with a few words but you are always under the watchful eyes of the press and Nascar!.

Agree...well said and to the point.

It doesn't help the NASCAR image when they bring in 50 Cent to Daytona (in an obvious effort to "diversify" the audience) and one of the first thing he tweets is "damn I don't see no black people lol". Combine that with this event, and it just reinforces the idea that NASCAR is a "southern redneck sport."

You know this is kind of a stupid article.....there's more crap like this going on in some other Pro Sports that don't get mentioned. Takes a moron to say this, write this, and take any of it in. Me personally I just think what a whack-job and go on.

I just want to know what he said that was so bad.

I will be leaving for Phoenix tomorrow morning, go to the race Sunday, then catch a few pre-season baseball games and then a game at Arizona State. Return to see the race locally next weekend.

All and all "probably" the only folks of color I will see will be playing baseball on the field and the only Hispanic folks I'll run into will be cooking my food or cleaning my hotel room.

And I will respect them all.

I wonder why the earlier posts were all removed. Other that the spam ad, I don't remember anything bad in them.

Wasn't it Walter Kronkite who always used to sign off with a "And that's the way it is."

Well that's the way it is today.....
