The next Kaepernick

08:04 AM ET 03.01 | Based on the growing trend, these are good days to have read-option skills as a quarterback, especially as the NFL Draft approaches. [Florida State's] EJ Manuel has the arm and mobility that should make several teams believe they can mine a [Robert Griffin III] or Russell Wilson type out of him. Manuel, however, is compared more with Colin Kaepernick -- the 49ers' third-year dynamic quarterback who just stormed his team all the way to the Super Bowl. Manuel is buying into that comparison. "When he was having success, I was happy for him," Manuel said. "Because I feel I kind of fit the Colin Kaepernick mold, a big guy who can throw."

Let's wait to see, first, if Kaepernick is even the first Kaepernick. Let's see how he does in 2013-2014.

JaMarcus Russell was a big guy who could throw, too. Let's tone down the hype a little.

The read-option will be figured out by NFL defenses this year.

I think teams will consider Manuel more of a project than a QB who can step right in and play on a regular basis like Kaepernick was able to.

By more or all the defenses this year. Some already figured it out last year. Otherwise SF, Seattle and Washington would've been undeafeated and they weren't.

I agree... and he's the type of guy I would take a chance on with that in mind. The kid can throw and he seems to have his head screwed on right. Put him on a team where he could sit and learn and I have a feeling he could shine.

Couple of years ago the wildcat was the newest and greatest thing to hit the NFL and was projected to change the offensive plans for years to come. Now you barely see it. The new great fad is mobile quarterbacks and this is going to change the way offenses are run in the future. Vick takes so many shots that he cannot stay on the field. RGIII can't stay on the fileld for even one year. It's only a matter of time before Kaepernick; Wilson; etc takes a big shot running the ball down field and joins them. Is the new mobile quarterback may be just the newest fad.

EJ Manuel is not JaMarcus Russell.

My thoughts exactly. I'll be very interested to see how he does when teams have an offseason to plan for him. My guess is they'll focus on keeping him in the pocket and try to make him beat them that way. Athleticism can get you a long way in a short time but it's what's between the ears that makes a QB elite.

You guys are both right but if you look at him (Cap) he does make the perfect throws and really only runs as a last option. If SF can reduce his called runs (options, dives) to 2-3 a game he'll be fine. His legs moreso buy him time in the pocket, rather than having "happy feet" looking to run after the 1st read isnt open

That was the best comparison you could come up with? There is only 1 thing these 2 QBs have in common so I'm guessing that was the basis of your comparison. Good one..

With the talent around him, I think SF will still be successful. Gore is a load running between the tackles, they have other options to hit on the edge, Vernon Davis can kill you running down the seam and Kap handled throwing from in the pocket very well. Oh yeah. And you have to keep an eye on him. He can hurt you any time he decides he wants to run.
