Closing controversy looming in Chicago

08:12 AM ET 03.01 | Kyuji Fujikawa and Carlos Marmol can clearly see their would-be competition. [Fujikawa and Marmol] have lockers at opposite ends of the clubhouse. But the Cubs see them working side-by-side in the eighth and ninth innings, at least for the next few months. ... But when the crowds are bigger than 4,037, look for Fujikawa getting acclimated as the setup guy and Marmol making your heart race trying to close out the game. ... [Marmol] is the short-term asset the Cubs almost shipped to the Angels last November. He approved the trade before the Cubs backed out of the deal over concerns about Dan Haren's hip. Whatever happens next with Fujikawa and Marmol, the endgame possibilities for the Cubs got a lot more interesting.

wiseup: not being a Cub fan it is fun to see Marmol in the ninth ining walking 3 and striking out 3. that is on his good day.

Dumbdown: That act won't last long while there is a unproven new Jap in the bullpen.

Historically speaking, Closers on Bad teams have had some pretty good Save numbers.

Hanrahan for the Pirates had 36 & 40 over the last 2 years. Chris Perez had 39 for the tribe last year.

But Marmol is a Blown Save waiting happen. 5 years ago, as a set-up man, he was the next big thing - all he needed was a little more control & seasoning... Today, they are the same thing about him.

Marmol will be dealt by June, if he does okay. That is the Cubs' best scenario.
