Cherry blasts Phaneuf

08:25 AM ET 03.01 | Don Cherry just couldn't wait until Saturday night to call out a Leafs defenseman. Passionate about an incident that occurred during the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 thrashing of the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night at Air Canada Centre, Don Cherry called in to Hockey Central at Noon Thursday adamant that Leafs defenceman Dion Phaneuf should have fought Montreal Canadiens tough guy Brandon Prust when challenged. "Dion runs around and bangs and smashes and looks for trouble," Cherry said. "I knew they were going to lose when he didn't answer the bell." Cherry, a former scrapper himself, maintained that Phaneuf doesn't have to fight every night but there is a time to stand up, and Phaneuf missed that chance.

Sorry Don. That was a smart move by Dion, for a few reasons

- It kept Prust offside and gave the rest of the PK a break
- It kept a key penalty-killer on the ice when there was still over 2 minutes left in a minor
- Fighting a guy like Prust is unbecoming of a captain

Rarely will I defend Phaneuf, but this is one time I think he used his brain. Toronto didn't lose that game because Dion didn't fight Brandon Prust.

I do to but, still ... this is Celine we're talking about. Captains are looked up to and are expected to lead by example. The only thing smart about him not fighting Prust is ... he didn't get his brain hurt.

By not dropping the gloves Prust was deep in the leafs end thus preventing the habs from entering the zone and killing valuable time on the penalty so Dion did do the correct thing here but what I have an issue with is Cherry, he was doing nothing more than finding an oppurtunity to Blast the Leafs and to many people seem to take Grapes words as the gospel. I would be more worried about the play where Dion was stripped of the puck leading to the Canadiens' fourth goal, the Pacioretty marker.

Judging by the Leafs' penalty minutes and fighting majors (second in total penalties, first in majors), the team is setting a perfectly good example without their captain fighting jobbers while killing (undeserved, terribly-called) penalties.

I don't have a problem with Phaneuf not fighting Prust.

I do have a problem with Phaneuf getting away with sticking Prust, then inviting Prust to the school dance, then dropping his stick as if wanting to go...and then promptly tucking his tail between his legs and running. It was an unprofessional punk move.

But whatever, the Habs handed them their asses, so who cares?

The Leafs are getting alot done with very little. ALthough I'll never openly root for the Leafs, I can at least say that I respect what they've managed to do so far this season.

Lots of crap talk from a guy whose team lost to those same Leafs 6-0 when they were at 100% health, had their starting goalie and one of their best scorers.

It's not Dion's fault Prust fell for it.

It's also not Dion???s fault the refs called an egregious 5 minute major and game misconduct to one of the Leafs??? best shutdown guys.

Not saying the Leafs were ever going to win this game (they weren???t. MTL wanted to redeem themselves more than the Leafs wanted to blow them out again), but things like that do tend to take their toll on a team.

I'm still appealing for a reschedule. This is a travesty. How the hell am I supposed to know when to start drinking without the HNIC theme?

I agree with all this.

And while I think it's always a good time for a fight, as has been said earlier it may not have been the time for one just then. It worked out well for them. But I had my hopes up anyway.

Another example was in Det vs Van last Sunday. Tootoo lambasted Tanev (on a legal hit he took 2 for charging on cause the ref wasn't paying attention). You could see Tootoo going "Huh?" So Kassian politely came over to challenge Tootoo and under any other circumstances, Tootoo drops them, but instead he let Kassian take 2 to even things up.

Some would call that turtling. While I would love to see Tootoo toss them at Kassian, I thought it was a smart play.

being selective! As far as I'm concerned that 6-0 game you speak of never happened!

A) that's awesome man, advocate pansyism on the grounds that it 'advantaged' your team (although it didn't in any real way).

B) cry me an effing river. the leafs are the only team to be at the receiving end of a questionable call.

Just drink during the years the Leafs don't win the Cup. You should be good to go.

I don't even know what the NHL on CBC theme is anymore.

The only real one is on TSN.
