O'Reilly saga only beginning

08:26 AM ET 03.01 | On the surface, Denver's matching of the Flames' offer sheet seemed to suggest an end to the soap opera that had become Ryan O'Reilly's offseason. Now we will see if O'Reilly's presence engenders some bad feelings among players in the locker room and from management walking around him every day. [Matt Duchene] didn't exactly spout verbal bouquets O'Reilly's way through this whole thing. ... [We] know O'Reilly is going to come here and work as hard or harder than ever to prove he's worth the contract. So, I think his teammates will move on from the situation soon. But you have to wonder a little bit about how Duchene will react, and you also have obviously wonder how management will secretly feel about him going forward.

Colorado has a rep of never handing out big contracts so I am suprised they matched considering the draft pic compensation would IMO have been worth it. I like O'Reilly but I feel he doesn't enjoy playing in Colorado and he and the team needs a change.

Thats alot of money just to do this whole dance all over again in 2 years.

I'd rather be looking at 2 top ten picks in a very deep draft.

Avs have no backbone.

There was a basically identical article when Subban finally signed with Montreal, complete with non-chalant teammates and whatnot. Worked out pretty well over there, hasn???t it?

Yes, it has.

QUOTE(#10):

The risk that Calgary might rise a bit in the standings made this an easy choice. The picks were worth it where Calgary currently stands, but throwing O'Reilly into the mix would probably see that pick change from third overall into 10-14 overall, and that isn't worth it.

yah, just like Nash propelled the Rangers into the stratosphere. Since winning the paper championship they've been incredible. I wish building a team was as easy as some like to think it is.

and now colorado gets to deal with this headache all over again in 2 years when he demands a raise. you reap what you sow. I'm going to laugh in 2 seasons.

QUOTE(#13):

You're telling me having a good two-way centre on their top line wouldn't help Calgary maybe turn the tables on the SEVEN one-goal games they've lost this year? They're currently 4 points out of the playoffs, and even if they had taken 3 points from those games they are in the top 20 of the league.

I think that they're the flames, and no matter what asset they acquire they will misuse and find a way to destroy.

There's a pretty solid body of proof. To me that makes Iginla that much more incredible.

I wasn't aware that SOLID 2-way players finished in the MINUS...

QUOTE(#15):

Not disagreeing, but in the past three seasons, Calgary has finished 10th, 10th and 9th in the West. I'm sure this current squad, plus O'Reilly, coulda hit that. That's why it didn't make sense for Colorado. I doubt they match if they're convinced they have a shot at Seth Drouin or MacKinnon.

this is fair, although I don't think its a question of plugging in a guy and saying they get over the hump, especially in Calgary's case.

The Tier II Jr A Flames are destined to be junk no matter who they have in the fold.
