Big East will change name; ND to ACC could be sooner than expected

12:41 PM ET 03.01 | With the impending spit of the seven basketball-only schools -- dubbed the "Catholic 7" -- from the Big East, the remaining football schools will rename their conference, while the basketball conference will retain the Big East moniker. The split is expected to take place in the fall, which will likely speed up Notre Dame's transition to the ACC in basketball. The football conference -- whatever it's called -- will retain its BCS status.

This is ridiculous. What other school does this crap? Pick a damn conference for ALL of your freakin' teams, or stay COMPLETELY independent.

Join the ACC in football, or stay the hell out altogether!

Oh, Domers! Respond to post #3, and hurry up there, Domers!

Don't see any Domers, so I'll help them out. "To: E-W-O, the ACC is lucky to have ND grace their conference with their Irish presence, in any sport that ND wishes to participate. Since we make a pretty good bundle of cash from NBC for football, we will keep independent in that sport. If Delaney and the B1G gut your conference, we will drop you like a hot potato and make a similar deal with the Big 12."

This was NOT meant as a shot at Domer fans. The Domers on these boards are almost all loyal, reasonable, passionate fans. What their school is attempting to do, however, is silly and it smacks of arrogance.

Again, what other school DOES this crap?! And I don't want to hear about how ND is "special." That's not logic, it's hubris.

It will come back to bite them soon enough if they don't get their football buttocks into a conference. The Domers' TV contract was worth $15 million last year and since they were in the NC game (which they don't have to share) they bagged about $24 million. Each B1G member received $25 million (a share of the premium TV games, Big Ten Network and bowl games). It would have been even higher if OSU and PSU would have been bowl-eligible like normal. With new contracts the numbers will change, but ND's path to the 4-team playoffs will not get any easier and that is where they made 40% of their TV money. The bottom line is that they have to have a super-successful season every year just to approach the TV money the B1G nets each team. When the NY markets and DC markets come into play and more B1G teams in the bowls the payout will grow considerably.
