Brian Burke: NHL coaches have a shelf life

09:34 AM ET 03.02 | With his days as an official front-office NHL executive on hold, it's been quiet times for former Maple Leafs president and general manager Brian Burke. The fiery Irishman has had little to say since being fired just prior to the season, but you can't keep a good quote down forever and Burke was in vintage form Friday morning in Boston. Speaking on a panel at the MIT Sloan Analytics Conference, Burke was at his bombastic best, addressing several issues from his ill-fated tenure at the helm of the Leafs. On the life of a coach: "Coaches have a shelf life and the harder the coach is on the athletes, the shorter the shelf life is." On his post-firing relationship with Ron Wilson: Burke said there was some fallout, including his former college pal suggesting he not attend his daughter's wedding last summer. "I'm going to have to fire my best friend in a half hour," Burke said of the moments before telling Wilson his fate a year go today. "There was a lot that was unpleasant."

Agreed. That's why that "special" magazine rack exists at the check out counters of the supermarkets. Makes them feel superior and self-righteous.
BTW, I haven't checked lately but ... who knows? Maybe Burke's the spawn of aliens or at least has been abducted and tampered with by them.

Asking Burke to assess coaching talent after keeping Wilson around way past his expiry date is like asking Milbury to assess player talent, what's the point, neither one is credible when it comes to these topics.
