Will Ryan O'Reilly deal cost Avs GM his job?

09:58 AM ET 03.02 | Great news! The Avalanche finally signed its top scorer, in the nick of time for the playoff push. Ryan "Factor" O'Reilly is back! So why did general manager Greg Sherman looked about as happy as if his pet goldfish just died? Maybe it was because Sherman's NHL career also got buried under the avalanche of a $10 million deal he never saw coming. How can he possibly survive as the Avs' GM after this blunder? "Sometimes," said Sherman, not smiling once during the five minutes he took to welcome O'Reilly back to the Avs, "the process takes a little longer than you would expect or would want." Let's be honest: Avalanche management wanted O'Reilly gone far away from Denver, with the team privately bad-mouthing the player and his family. Now the Avs are stuck with paying the popular 22-year-old center at least 40 percent more than a previous take-it-or-leave-it proposal, all because the Calgary Flames broke NHL etiquette and stuck Colo- rado with a hefty offer sheet. The bottom line: Dillydallying instead of closing a trade to bring a top four defenseman to Colorado in return for O'Reilly, the Avs let their payroll structure be set by a general manager in Calgary, of all people.

Maybe Sherman can get his pal Mr. Peabody to dig out the "WABAC machine."

A cautionary tale it seems.....dont play hard-ball with your Restricted Free Agents......seems like O'reilly is just gonna be there the minimum allowed amount of time...then he's gonzo.

Yep. It starts at the very top with Bettman and Fehr and trickles all the way down through the ranks. Kind of like sheyet rolling down hill.

"Will Ryan O'Reilly deal cost Avs GM his job?"
Why? He is signed for two years, isn't he? And ... if the Avs aren't happy with that, there's a trade deadline coming up. There should be at least a dozen teams interested in his services. The kid's only 22 with nothing but many good years ahead of him.
I think these are the idiots at the Denver Post just stirring the pot because they have nothing better to do or ... don't know how to do better.

That won't work the Av's have to keep him for a year.

That might work out even better. If he has a good year, it's win-win for both.

He better have a good year considering what he ended up getting paid. I don't get all the hoopla O'Relly is getting. He is 6 ft 200lbs and only had 60 hits last year so he is not the big hard to play against center alot of people think he is. He put up decent numbers last year but not worthy of a $10 mill 2 year contract.

Hello all...... I am sticking to the original postion I had which is the Av's shouldn't have matched the offer sheet. This draft is very very deep this year and the compebsation would have been draft picks if they didn't match. Now many would say O'Reilly's value is more than good draft picks in a deep draft but I firmly believe his shelf life is only the length of this contract because everything being = no way in hell he resigns on good terms after its done. I believe its a hate / hate deal, he hates being there and Av's hate paying that price.

As we speak, the Flames GM is on his knees thanking the hockey gods that the Avs decided to match their offer sheet. There would've been hell to pay in Calgary if the deal went through and the Flames lost him on waivers plus the draft pics.
And we thought Kevin Lowe was dumb!

the trade deadline has usually passed by now last season it was February 27th the Avs are stuck with him and have to qualify him at 6.5 after next season or he becomes a UFA Feaster screwed them bad. Too bad Sherman matched a division opponent would have lost a 1st and 3rd and paid 1/2 the salary and taken 1/2 the cap hit of a player in Columbus

According to some the added value is that he hits and plays two ways. Except...he finished in the minus for two straight seasons and has mediocre hitting stats. This is media driven fluff. A month ago NOBODY thought oreilly was more than 3 million for 2 or 3 years, but now all of a sudden it became the in-thing amongst insiders to try to play this guy off as an effing All-Star.
He is good, no doubt, but his contract is a joke. Without Gauthier or Burke around, Feaster cemented his place as biggest clown under the big top.
