Manti Te'o says he is faster than he showed at combine

09:53 AM ET 03.03 | Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Manti Te'o disappointed at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine with his poor 40-yard dash time and lack of explosive athletic ability during on-field drills. While Te'o left a lot to be desired in the Underwear Olympics, he did impress scouts behind closed doors during the interview process. Te'o showed off a great understanding of the game and a strong sense of leadership, which has always been his best attribute. Te'o will now just need to improve on his workouts times for when the scouts visit Notre Dame for the team's Pro Day. Te'o knows that he will need to improve his times and he believes that it is obvious he will shave time off of his 40-yard dash. "Obviously, faster than a 4.8," Te'o said. "We'll see what happens. I think the 40 time measures what the 40 time is supposed to measure. I think that's something that I'm going to get better. The only way from here is up, so I'm definitely going to get better at that. I think, as far as play, I think what's on the film, that's the play. Obviously, I can get faster in my 40." Te'o does have a point. Some guys are just track guys and their speed does not translate to football speed. When you watch Te'o play, he shows great instincts and is always finding his way to the ball. The quick play recognition and angles are more important for a linebacker than long speed.

I'M faster than he showed at the combine. (Okay, no, I'd still be running that 40.)

"If a middle linebacker runs a 4.82 but he is instinctive and quick in a short area, the 40-yard dash time doesn't matter," quote from a GM at the combine. And it's true. I wouldn't take him in the first round because he got jobbed in the championship game. But the 40 time? Unless he plays for Dallas, New England, or Arizona, there's no reason he'll be chasing WRs 40 yards down field.

Does he not realize that he has totally blown his image.......and cannot offset that with great performing.

If you watched any Notre Dame game, he's a guy who gets the job done by playing above his physical size and talent. He's smart, has good instincts, and makes plays. So he was never going to impress anyone at the combine with his measurements. And anybody drafting him isn't looking at his combine scores.
His main job there was to explain (a) his side of the catfish scandal, and (b) his bad performance against Alabama. He didn't make any excuses for either of them. A good sign.

If you had to spend your life running from dead, imaginary girlfriends, you'd be fast, too.

He's delusional. Everybody who goes from College to the NFL has football smarts, good instincts and can make plays. Those that succeed in the NFL have all of that AND fast 40 times, street smarts as well as football IQ and relentlessly make plays. Te'o will end up a backer on special teams........

Te'o should really speak to the media as little as possible. At this point, none of that jawing is going to help him.

Almost seems like Te'o is evolving into the defensive version of Tebow: good college player, high profile, polarizing personal history, and way too much media attention.

The only one he should be speaking to is his girlfriend. Oh, what? She's dead? And never existed? Oops!

Pretty soon "Te'oing" will be the new thing in America. It involves talking to your dead, non-existent girlfriend in the middle of the street, in coffee shops, in church, etc.

If he says he's faster then I believe him. Just like when he said he had a girl friend. This guy has turned into a circus act. Good fit of Cowboys or Jets!

As a lot of athletes before him have already proven, just because you have smarts and instincts on the field, it doesn't necessarily translate well off the field. If he was the only guy with an online only relationship, then you might have a point. But it's apparently getting to be pretty common these days.
He could have a career like Fred Dean or Sam Mills, who also played above their measurables. Or he could be a bust. But it's not going to have anything to do with all this media drama. It'll going to come down to what he does on the field. If he does well, people will forget this thing. Hell, Ray Lewis made most people forget he was involved in a murder.
