Will New England play tag? Don't bet on it

08:04 AM ET 03.04 | NFL teams woke up Monday morning with the clock ticking. The Patriots have yet to use the franchise tag, and have until 4 p.m. [Monday] to apply it, or sit on it for another year. During the past two week window, there was reason to believe they might exercise the option, but with the cap space they've created with Tom Brady re-structuring his deal last week, and the flat cap likely springing more players on the market, it seems more likely they'll pass. ... Perhaps the Pats will ultimately pull the trigger on the tag and assure themselves of not losing either [Aqib Talib or Sebastian Vollmer]. But it???s looking more and more like they'll keep the tag in their pocket.

Not in their DNA...

I thought they would have tagged Sebastian. Aqib sort of faded down the stretch for them, and the Hoodie don't like that, so that's not a huge surprise. besides, I think Bill has Darrelle on his mind these days.

Wes, the ball is back in your court. I don't think your going to transition well to any other team.

That would be too exciting for the Pats

Not in their DNA...

Exactly. The franchise pricetag is the average of the top 5 paid players at that position, and the Pats hostorically don't pay that kind of money to anyone but their QB. Also, they have to believe those players are in the top five.

I just don't see them tagging a couple of players, in Vollmer and Talib, who have had a difficult time with injuries of late.

March 4, 2013  09:03 AM ET

No, because the names mentioned are not tag worthy. Jeesh! Ya don't committ $57 million guaranteed to Brady for the next five years to give the short term cap space to guy like Talib, and by kicking the cap can down the road they have no future room for many long term contracts. They gotta go young and cheap.

tag vollmer.

They cannot do anything now until they deal with Welker.
