Another medical mystery in St. Louis

08:13 AM ET 03.04 | These days, even 58-year-old Ozzie Smith looks like a decent option. The Cardinals are a mess at shortstop. With a month to go before the 2013 regular-season opener, a vital position is more tangled than the ligament in Rafael Furcal's damaged right elbow. Furcal is being shut down because of lingering pain and distress. Really? And how can Furcal get shut down when he was never ready to play? This is all very confusing. ... Chris Carpenter's elbow was fine. Lance Berkman's knee was fine. Jon Jay's shoulder was fine. Matt Holliday's back was fine. ... The Cardinals will tell you that this isn't about the ligament. It's a bone spur near the ligament. Whatever. Furcal can't play. And this is ludicrous.

Furcal is falling apart. They are nuts to expect anything from him.

Agreed. My position was that Mozeliak should have invested more in the position than getting Ronny Cedeno this winter. Unfortunately, I think I was right.

Rafael Furcal would be gone together with Carl Crawford, something similiar has to do with both players,, injuries in the elbows much alike!!!!

Isn't he pretty old anyway? Old and in poor health, not a winning combo at a key position.

Yeah, the last time we signed an ex-Cub shortstop, we won a championship. Maybe the same will happen with Cedeno.

Hold on Bernie, the Cards are not in that bad of shape at SS as you are making it to be. They have four capable players to take over if needed. Your paper on Sunday suggested that they go out and trade Adams for Hardy and assume his 14 million dollar contract, very bad move.

He's a good player when he's healthy, I think all his injuries and stints on the DL is why the Dodgers traded him to the Cardinals.....

Hardy isn't a good idea. I wouldn't mind seeing if they could trade Adams for a young promising shortstop. Let the new one, Kozma, and Descalso fight it out for the position. I don't see Cedano as anything more than a bench player.
Are there any teams with a need at first and a spare major league ready shortstop? Probably not. Good shortstops are as rare as good catchers now that PED testing is in full swing. I've had a bad feeling about SS all winter. Who really thought that ligament would heal itself?
