Why Spencer tag may spark unprecedented battle

07:59 AM ET 03.05 | When it comes to compensation, Cowboys DE Anthony Spencer's position isn't unlike real estate: It's about location, location, location. Spencer, if he was tagged as a linebacker in the team's 3-4 defense, could claim that he's actually a defensive end in the team's new 4-3 attack. Because he will be. Last year, Spencer made $8.8 million under the linebacker tag. He's entitled to a 20-percent raise, which moves his compensation to $10.56 million. But the base franchise tender for defensive ends is $11.175 million. So, in theory, Spencer should get the higher amount. ... Sure, we're only talking about $615,000 on an eight-figure salary. But if Spencer is entitled to it, he should get it.

This is the best offseason thread Dallas can come up with? Jerry must be getting jealous when he sees all the Jets stories.

This is temporary. They have a week to redo Romo and maybe a deal already in the works for Spencer. A very fluid tag call.

It is an interesting situation with Anthony Spencer.

The CBA is based off of the previous season in terms of "tag", not the up and coming one.

Dallas made a good move with Spencer because now they can have him play hard again, knowing he is on yet another contract year or they can deal him and get something in return.

Personally, I would deal him and get a draft pick in return...nothing less than a Round 3.

With names like Osi Umenyiora, Dwight Freeney and John Abraham available, Dallas can sign a veteran on the cheap who can get them 6-10 sacks from that side while developing their youth. Tyronne Crawford is said to be a very good prospect who was on IR last season.

Freeny playing along side Ware would be worth seeing.

Maybe 2006 Freeney.

Pretty sure Terrell Suggs had a similar "unprecedented" battle.
