Cowboys ready to trade tagged Spencer

07:54 AM ET 03.06 | The cap-strapped Cowboys spent their franchise tag on linebacker Anthony Spencer for a second consecutive year on Monday, raising some eyebrows in the process. Now we're learning the Cowboys could have other plans for Spencer. Citing a team source, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday on "NFL Total Access" that Dallas is open to trading Spencer and his $10.6 million salary if a suitor presents itself. Spencer would figure to have some value on the open market. He's coming off the best season of his career (11 sacks, 95 tackles) and teams always will have interest in defenders who know how to get to the quarterback. That said, Spencer is 29 and will want a multiyear commitment with any team that gets him.

Tag & Trade what a Life!!!

Interesting scenario. He has trade value for sure, but the cowboys locked themselves in a room without windows when they tagged him. The have to pay him that now and it all counts against this years cap. Kind of like that scene from blazing Saddles where the sheriff holds the gun to his own head.

poor decisions being made in the fron office..... reason #31 why dallas will continue to remain a very average team under this administration LOL.

I do not see this as a poor decision...right or wrong, this is what I see :
Spencer has been an average player in terms of sacks but a very solid run stuffer and was asked to drop in coverage often. When he finally hit his contract year, he pass rushed more often and nabbed 11.5 sacks.
11 plus sacks in the NFL is going to cost a team about $8-12m for a DE.
By tagging him, Dallas gets something vs nothing out of the guy...
Meaning, if they can not trade him, paying him $10m for 1 season will guarantee that they get 1 more solid year out of him while at the age of 29. If they gave him a long term extension, he might revert back to his 6 sack seasons since he got paid and he would be crossing that 30yr old threshold.
Dallas made the right move here for sure...if they trade, they get something vs nothing, if they do not trade, they get about what the price would be for that type of production on the line, all while developing more youth to replace him.

This is why Jerry Jones needs to fire himself as GM. On the other hand, the Dolphins have cash to burn. Imagine him opposite Cameron Wake?!

You are right about Jerry but the Wake comment??
He is already playing opposite Ware, who is hands down the best pass rusher in football, Wake is a step back for Spencer.

I don't disagree that Ware is a great pass rusher, but I think the original poster was thinking Phin Fans would love to see that pair of edge rushers lining up for them.

Agree on that, I was just thinking about my Dolphins having a dual threat. He would make Wake better than he already is by taking pressure off of him.

Is tag and trade like catch and release?

Gotcha...and yes sir, your Phins would have a nice player in Spencer and Wake for sure.
Dunno about the dough he is going to want though? If Jerry is not willing to pony up, I do not envision the Phins doing so either.

At 29 years old there is limited long-term value in Spencer. Should have tagged and traded last year when he was 28. Can't see a team trading any premium draft pick or player for a 29 year old Linebacker has had only 1 year with double digit sacks. He is a 5-6 sack a year guy. His production last year was an anomaly until proven otherwise.

I'm sure Jones will pull something out of his pants just like the sheriff did.

If you didn't tag him, you would have lost him, and therefore have no trad chip...or worse not have a decent DE opposite of D.Ware in the new 4-3

Trade him ASAP.
This dude never did ANYTHING until he was facing Free Agency. He's obviously talented, but his desire and commitment seem to leave a lot to be desired. Dallas doesn't need any more players with a lack of focus, so ship him off while his value is as high as it'll ever be.
