Potential landing spots for Welker

07:55 AM ET 03.06 | In a perfect world, Wes Welker would finish his career in New England. The hope has always been to have a deal in place by the time free agency begins March 12. But don't be surprised if Welker and his representatives are fielding offers this weekend. ... Let's start with Denver. Think if Peyton Manning told John Elway he wanted Welker to be his slot receiver, Elway wouldn't move mountains to get him? Isn't that what he did to get Manning? ... Then there's Indianapolis. The Colts certainly have the cap room to make a reasonable offer. The Dolphins have also come up in the Welker discussions of late. ... Welker might also get some feelers from Houston given his roots.

He's gonna sign with the Patriots but it makes you wonder why he's not interested in winning a SB

He's better off with Brady!!!

Welker would get lost on another team. The reason why he's important in NE is because Brady wants him there. If Brady wasn't behind him he'd be gone. On another team he wouldn't have that support. He needs to stay right where he is and negotiate a fair deal for everybody.

Welker might also get some feelers from Houston given his roots.
What roots are those? He's from Oklahoma City and played for Texas Tech.

Obviously he has some doubts about staying in New England or this would have been done last year. Maybe he had his fill of taking the biggest hits in the blame game for that last superbowl and this years playoff loss.

Consider the source. While not as bad as the Globb, the Herald is right down there too.

Thats a two way street. Anybody who does not think Welker makes Brady a better QB is just plain wrong. He is the go to guy to move the chains. Without him Brady takes a lot more hits and the punter gets a lot more reps in games.

Those were some pretty big drops. You could mention that Brady's throw had him leaping and twisting around in the SB, but he should have pulled it in. Welker knows Edelman will cut into his playing time when he recovers, but NE is still his best stop.

Consider this: I don't think the Pats have much interest in signing Welker to long term deal at his age and cost. They are waiting to see what happens with Cruz and the Giants situation. As an RFA Cruz will cost them their first round pick, but I say they will make him an offer the Giants cannot or will not match to keep him. Will cost them less and they get younger and a very good slot guy. Part business, part personal. Same as the Ballard deal last year....

Maybe but Cruz is somewhat of a question mark at this state. 1 great year, 1 mediocre year. Could be because Eli stunk it up last year but maybe Cruz just surprised defenses his first year and will never be able to repeat it. Welker OTOH, is a known quantity.

Now there's reports that Welker plans on testing the open market and that the Pats are considering Amendola as a fallback plan if Welker decides to go elsewhere.

Welker might be lost on most teams but with the right team, used the right way, he would be sick...
For example : in Denver, he would still get 100+ catches in the slot with Manning. He would be scary in New Orleans and with the Packers too...even Romo would benefit from having him.
But...he will not leave the Pats...this is one of the guys Brady "took less" for them to keep...

Agreed. I think they have a very good chemistry between QB and receiver. Either way he needs to stay in New England. The kind of chemistry they have can't be created in a couple of months of two a days. He helps keep NE on the field offensively and Brady off his back.

I heard last night that he and New England were close to finalizing a long term contract.

Absolutely. if catching 100 per yr in the slot were so easy, why don't the other precision passers in the league have one? He is always getting open in traffic and piles up the YAC every year. To say he would be nothing without Brady is as accurate as saying Brady would be nothing without Welker.
On Cruz, I am getting sick of the NYG letting young talent leave. As far as I am concerned, Cruz has proven himself and the Jints owe it to Eli to give him at least one target who can make the big catch and stay healthy.

Its' interesting that all the teams mentioned are AFC teams. I see the hand of Welker's agent in this story, by adding the "your rival gets stronger" element. If it were last year, you would have seen the Jets mentioned too. But the Jets don't have an offense and are no longer credible.

The Pass in the Super Bowl hit Welker over The LEFT SHOULDER he was running full speed had 3 Guys on him he looked over his RIGHT Shoulder spun around raised his arms in an attempt to catch a pass that hit his finger Tips, that was a bad pass, not a dropped pass, even if he catches the ball he has to hit the ground around 25 yards from the Goal Line, no where near a Touchdown, what is all the BS about him dropping passes, without him they just don't make the playoffs those 2 Years, sorry about that, but he can play on my team any day!!! Get Real!

OK, but name me any "young talent" they have let go that turned into much at the next stop. Who? Steve Smith? Boss? Who? and not so sure that they do not think that Jurnegin could cover that spot. Nicks is more important and so is JP in the long term contract/cap world....
