Can Mets keep Santana from reaching $25M option?

08:01 AM ET 03.06 | Johan Santana's $25 million option for 2014 will reportedly become a player option if he pitches 215 innings this season and is on the active roster for the final 30 days of the regular season. There are other ways the option could kick in, such as competing for a Cy Young Award or throwing 300 innings, but they're unlikely to happen. However, it is possible Santana pitches 215 innings. I doubt it will happen, given his history and how his Spring is progressing, but it's the most probable scenario out of the possible options. The thing is, as was the case with Francisco Rodriguez in 2011, I assume this front office will do whatever is necessary to either trade Santana or keep that option from being attainable.

No team in baseball will take a injured pronged and over paid pitcher. So let him pitch and you have to hope he gets injured again and save the 25 mill for 14.

If they can they will.

I wouldn't lose any sleep worrying about Santana throwing 215 innings. The last time he did that was in 2008. And he's already fighting arm problems this Spring.

You would think that Santana would have come into spring training in the best shape of his life with that option hanging in the balance.
