Trout wanted $1 million before $20K raise

08:03 AM ET 03.06 | Depending on your perspective, Los Angeles' renewing its young star for $510,000 ranks somewhere between insulting and plain old business. Mike Trout's agent, in his talks with [the Angels], implied that the outfielder wanted a $1 million salary for 2013, according to major-league sources. Such a figure would have been the largest ever paid to a player with fewer than two years of service. But Trout's agent, Craig Landis, could have asked for $25 million and it wouldn't have mattered. Trout, as a pre-arbitration player, had no leverage. And the Angels, rather than reward Trout for his historic rookie season, simply followed a scale that they use for all of their pre-arb players, sources say.

And if the team owed him more in a year he would tank - he would have no problem TAKING the money not earned. Shut up. It's business.

It will be interesting to see if he can replicate his numbers from last year. If he does, then I think the Angels will think about rewarding him much like the Rays did with Longoria.

I think they did the prudent thing here, because this coming season could be different than last season. Get a better idea of exactly what level the kid is going to play at year in and year out. He faded at the end of last year. You can say he's only going to make them pay when his contract runs out but he's going to do that regardless.

business are business and there is nothing the agent or the player can do,but whatever happen in matt moore from the rays??he was in the majors in the 2011 for the first time at the end of the season, and i check his salary it is one million per year, is that truth or i'm confuse??

Mike trout opportunities will come and before trout can blink an eye,he will be making up to 5 millions per year in two years more!!!

March 6, 2013  10:28 AM ET

its crazy how the salaries and contracts can turn in a blink,,,

March 6, 2013  10:30 AM ET

soon very soon the team may have to trade mike trout to the yankees or to the rangers why? because the team wouldn't be able to sign him into his demands!!!

March 6, 2013  10:31 AM ET

the angels DO HAVE too many albastros contracts in/pujols/hamilton/weaver/CJ WILSON/vernon wells!!!

March 6, 2013  10:33 AM ET

but if we take a long look into their rotation/bullpen/linenup??the teams required better hitting coach/better pitching coach/ and a better bench coach bullpen coach, something WHERE the halos had have lacked in the last 4 years no exceptions!!!!

March 6, 2013  10:36 AM ET

when the halos start a lazy season? first thing to do? blame the manager, but everybody should look into themselves as a players, do your job as a hitter/do your job as a starter/do your job as a reliever then we will talk about adjustments,,,stop the pintpoint against all directions except yours!!!

March 6, 2013  10:40 AM ET

angels refuse to acknowledge weakness in their rotation/as well they do refuse to accept their weakness in their lineup, yes the season is long but the players should had have been more agressive in their playing time,,too much passive approach has been admitted in the halos organization,no discipline at all,no patient at all at batter box, and yet they still lacking in excecution at the end, negative approach in every game it only brings failure to the whole team!!!

March 6, 2013  12:37 PM ET

The Angels should take a "wait and see" attitude with Trout. Terrific rookie season, if he keeps those numbers and he will make $25 mil a year in no time.

Sorry, Trout, you have to do it again before people will take you seriously. Ask Jason Heyward.

Mickey Mantle may again roam CF in pinstripes. Young guys can hold grudges regardless of the rules...

March 6, 2013  05:08 PM ET

Trout will Wear Pinstripes!!!

the angels could have a golden opportunity, the reliever from the braves JOHN VENTERS its available,,,through trade ofcourse!!!

March 6, 2013  08:54 PM ET

If he wants the money now he is going to have to give up arbitration and or FA years.

March 7, 2013  07:48 AM ET

I'm all for controlling runaway salaries but I think what the Angels did was an insult. Instead they should have offered an incentive laden contract that could add up to 1 million dollars if he hit specific numbers.

In fact all professional contracts should have incentives. That would help curb players that 'tank' after getting a big payout.
