Red Wings, Flyers present possible destinations for Bouwmeester

12:33 PM ET 03.06 | Flames defenseman Jay Bouwmeester is once again the subject of trade rumors, with the Flyers and Red Wings emerging as possible destinations for the veteran blueliner. Both teams are in need of top-four defensive help and while Bouwmeester's time in Calgary has been disappointing, he's still a very capable and very solid top option for a team that could put a better structure around him. The Flames have not appeared willing to just give him away, however, and the price could be more than what Detroit or Philly is willing to pay.

I'd take him in Deetroyit...

March 6, 2013  12:40 PM ET

Overrated and way overpaid.

Bret Hedican redux. If this guy didn't skate like the second -coming of Al Iafrate - he would be a career AHL-er. Little hockey sense, average puck-mover and non-existent offence from a guy who can blaze up and down the ice.

But, if you are desperate...

March 6, 2013  12:41 PM ET

Holmgren should do nothing. I think it would be best to miss the playoffs and get in the lottery.

Lord knows they can always use Defense. lately though they have looked better. Well except the hawks game but they make everybody look bad.

They have looked better for sure.

I'm not saying I'd give up anything of note to get the guy, but he'd be top 4 in Det.

The second coming of Nicklas Lidstrom!

NOT!

But, we'll take him!

An aging defenseman is not going to help the Flyers. They are an average team at best.

I thought Detroit looked pretty good in the Hawks game. If it weren't for a couple of inexcusable delay of game penalties at the end, they would have won that game.

Yup...

To Detroit: Bouwmeester

To Calgary: Franzen

You mean lame arsed stupid penalties that should not exist?

They didn't look bad until that final 3 minutes. And yeah we can use the D for sure... they've looked ok but they still got a way to go....you could pair Bouwmeester with Kronwall on the PP as well.. but like Hank said...what do you give up for him?? I don't know as we got anyone we want to move right now. If it was up to me and I know some (Hank) disagree but I'd move Franzen ... he's lazy and fragile...plays hard only in spurts and is a defensive liability

The defense has looked WAY better than I thought it would be. The defense hasn't been the problem, it's the lack of depth scoring. Defense hasn't been compromised with the list of injuries, but scoring has certainly been affected.

The Wings already have 9 defensemen on the roster. Kent Huskins and Ian White are sulking because they're healthy scratches. Carlo Colaiacovo is still injured. The defensemen in the lineup have been playing much better recently.

Pavel Datsyuk is justifiably the highest paid player on the Wings roster at $6.7M. Kronwall is justifiably the highest paid defenseman at $4.75M. Boumeester is unjustifiably owed $6.68M next season.

Next year the cap is dropping from $70.2M to $64.3M. Filppula, Cleary, Miller, Brunner, White, Huskins and Howard are all pending unrestricted free agents at the end of this season. Andersson, Kindl and Smith are all restricted free agents. The Wings are slated to have under $18M available to re-sign a significant chunk of their lineup.

If Boumeester was a right-handed shot with a much smaller contract or an expiring, the Wings might legitimately be in play for him.

Datsyuk desperately needs some help on his line. Pavel keeps feeding Abdelkader and Cleary beautiful scoring chances that never get cashed-in.

I agree about moving Franzen at some point for the same reasons you cited, but right now is not quite the time. The Wings need offense.

He's my favorite player...but yes, all of these things are correct.

I didn't want to see him go to Vancouver.

If he dies on the vine in Calgary I'm OK with that.
