Browns coming after Kruger, Avril (and more)

08:05 AM ET 03.07 | If Cleveland has anything to say about it, the team will look very different in 2013. The Browns will pursue two of the biggest-name pass-rushers in free agency in Baltimore's Paul Kruger and Detroit's Cliff Avril, league sources told The Plain Dealer. They're also likely to go after Raiders defensive tackle Desmond Bryant and Cardinals linebacker Quentin Groves, sources said. ... Avril, a defensive end, will also be a hot ticket come Tuesday. But the Browns might have the inside track, because their new defensive line coach Joe Cullen helped draft Avril, 26, in Detroit in 2008 and developed him as a rookie. That season, Avril led all rookies with six sacks and four forced fumbles.

I don't know if Avril or Krueger are every down players. Great pass rushers, but I'm not sure about how they defend against the run. Bryant is going to be visiting with Roger over his offseason misdeeds, so there are issues there as well.
These could be great moves, or Cleveland could end up being the new Dream Team.

I read somewhere that they would not franchise him.

I think it's came down to keeping Ellerbe or keeping Kruger. Apparently they don't have the cap room to keep both.

Guess the Browns didn't learn anything watching Washington and Philadelphia sign all those FAs and then not going anywhere.

I believe the Ravens said they would only franchise Flacco, if necessary. They got the Flacco deal done before the franchise tag deadline, but didn't snag anyone else.
Kruger's stock went WAY up just over the past season. He is going to be overpaid as soon as he gets a new contract. He improved this year for sure, but he's not quite that awesome.

It's not like they signed anyone yet, it is a newspaper article.

It's going to be interesting to see what the Browns will do with all that cash available to them under the cap.

Where in the article did it say the Browns were going after Vick???
The big difference is the Browns are targeting players in their prime or coming into it. They have a lot of money that they are required to spend but that doesn't mean they are going to just make it rain with FA's.

I'm glad that the Browns are finally being agressive in free agency, but why are they focusing on defense? Their D last year was pretty good. It's their offense that stunk. They need receivers and tight ends in the worst way; they shouldn't be relying solely on the draft for that...

They are changing from a 4-3 to a 3-4 under new D coordinator Ray Horton. They lack depth at LB and DE in this new system so they are concentrating their efforts on a pass rushing DE who could also play LB.
With the amount of cap space available to them they should be able to fill major holes this off season but unfortunately not all. I expect them to target a WR in FA and also a FB to help clear holes for T-Rich. As for TE, I think they might try to keep Watson around for another year to help develop Cameron or at least get them through another year until they can draft one.
