Judges to hear new case against Redskins name

01:14 PM ET 03.07 | The newest court case against the Washington Redskins name begins on Thursday. A group of Native Americans will present their case to the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board arguing that the Redskins should lose their federal trademark protection. This same board ruled to remove the trademark protection from the Redskins in 1999, but that case was overturned on a technicality, which does not apply to the current group of plantiffs. The Redskins name has been a debated topic through the years that has heated up once again this offseason. Vincent Gray, the mayor of D.C., said there would need to be a "discussion" about a name change if the Redskins wanted to return to the district (they currently play their games in Landover, Md.) in January. The following month Native Americans held a daylong symposium at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. discussing the offensive nature of the Redskins nickname.

I doubt it. Just more politically correct nonsense. The high school team on an Indian reservation in Arizona uses the nickname Redskins. Are those Indians racist? Every so often a similar group of nitwits tries to get the Cleveland Indians to change their name and to have Chief Wahoo banned as a trademark. Stupid demands by self-appointed brilliant folks.

If they want to be associated with Washinton DC perhaps they should change their names to the Deadweight Clowns.

I think threatening to make them return to the district unless they change their name would have a lot more weight behind it....but enough of this PC garbage already!!!

I just don't understand why we are so sensitive about Indian names. I thought it was a sign of respect but I guess, since I'm not full blooded Indian, it isn't. Get over it people!!!!!!!!

If they, when moving the Nets, changed the name to the Brooklyn Brownskins, and had a "stereotypical" black guy as a mascot, people would FREAK OUT. I have no problem with the Braves. Seminoles, Sioux, or even Indians (even though it's just a reminder of how dumb we were, since we called them Indians because we thought we were in India) but Redskins? That's just dumb.

Not in our lifetime or several others.

Just for clarity, this isn't a case to force the Redskins to change their name. This case is an attempt to remove the trademark protection from the name. The change would then (supposedly) be made by the team for financial reasons.

Statute of limitations.

If you don't like it, you should have complained years ago.

This particular Native American group needs something meaningful to do.
