01:28 PM ET 03.07 | Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Tyson Jackson's 2013 salary was reduced from $14.72 million to $4.2 million as part of a recent contract restructure, according to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star. Jackson's cap number will be reduced by $2.8 million in the deal, which means he gave up far more than the team gained. The Chiefs appear to have given Jackson a choice of becoming a cap casualty or taking a reduction in pay. Even the most noble of players wouldn't take an immediate $10 million paycut for the good of the organization. Jackson played the role as a 3-4 defensive end under the previous coaching regime. With Andy Reid coming to town and a potential change in defensive scheme, Jackson's role as a blocker-occupying end will be less valuable. Jackson hasn't been much of a pass rusher in his first four seasons, as he has logged just five sacks. He may have seen the writing on the wall. That extra $10 million wasn't coming back on the free agent market.

Reducing a player's cap number is not the same as reducing their pay for a particular season. Unless they're talking total cap hit over length of the contract, but that doesn't make much sense.
