NHLPA approves new realignment plan for next season

07:34 PM ET 03.07 | NHL fans around the world are seeing their dream come true, as the hard-fought battle to realign the NHL has finally come to a victorious end. The NHL and NHLPA have both agreed on and approved a new realignment plan that will take effect after the season and be in place next season and be re-evaluated after the 2014-15 season. Upon hearing this news, every NHL fan that has been holding out realignment leapt up from their desk and burst into the "Yub-Nub" song from Return of the Jedi. This is truly monumental for the NHL and could mean an epic resurgence in popularity amongst American sports fans. Some fans may still have an issue with how the realignment stacked up, but overall this seems to be exactly what was needed. The lack of a Canadian team in the Atlantic Division may rub some the wrong way, as Columbus and Montreal could have easily been switched, but a lot of the old hockey rivalries are primed to take off once again, and any small problems that can be had with how realignment looks is canceled out by how meaningful this could end up being to the popularity of the NHL in America moving forward.

Another stupid Fansided post. Switch Montreal and Columbus? Yeah, splitting Montreal from Toronto, Boston and Ottawa would be sooooo smart.

I'm just glad I won't have to stay up late to watch divisional games anymore.

Unfortunately it's the type of idiocy we've come to expect.

I'm still trying to figure out why they're calling a conference with Montreal, Ottawa, Boston, Toronto, Buffalo, Detroit, Tampa Bay and Florida the "Central". Are they defining "Central" as focal point?

It bothered me at first too, but at second glance it kinda makes sense.

Well, since when is Columbus on the Atlantic coast? Or Pittsburgh for that matter?

Maybe Eastern is a better name rather than Central. But, who cares. It'll one day be named the Randy Carlyle Conference anyway...

Because they couldn't find their sphincter muscle with GPS. How do you expect them to figure out where East ends and Central starts?

And ... why do we get to look at a Daniel Cancerillo doing his best Nail Yakupov impersonation? The Hawks are even a part of the story!

Congratulations Otis. :-)

yeah, I sense geography was never a good subject for these guys in any sport
When I was a kid, Both the Brave and falcons were in The Western Conferences (baseball and NFL) while Dallas was...and still is...in the East?

that's a given roamer...they're lucky they can count the number of teams they have in the league

Legends in their own minds. They win one lousy Cup in over 40 years and act like they're a dynasty! Scary to think what will happen if, by some chance, they manage to win another one in the next decade!

Just wait until Colorado moves to Alaska, Nashville moves to Quebec City and Winnipeg moves back to Atlanta.

This is WONDERFUL!

Stars had a terrific division win in LA last night and I was asleep at 11P. Midway through the 2nd period. That's beyond stupid.
