Cards' 2013 has 'transition' written all over it

08:07 AM ET 03.08 | Cardinals fans may not want to hear it, but some signs are there. Shortstop Rafael Furcal is finished. ... Furcal's demise [came] on the heels of Chris Carpenter's career-imperiling setback. Neither development came as a total shock, but both conspire to increase the reliance on home-grown younger players. This isn't terrible news for fans, given the strong overall state of the organization. But it does put the 2013 team at risk to suffer growing pains while blending more prospects into the playing mix. The long-term Cardinals picture looks very good. In the near term, expect some slippage here and there as the team relies on less-seasoned players.

I totally disagree with the writer on this subject, because they played last year without 15 and most of the season without 29 and still made the playoffs.

When Pujols left it was supposed to be a transition period for the Cardinals. Then what happened? Right....
In basketball if the Boston Celtics look like a disaster during preseason I always say "I doubt they will do well for the year BUT I won't be surprised if they make the playoffs either." Simply put I never count the Celtics out.
The same exact thing goes for the St. Louis Cardinals. A very well run orgainzation from what I see.

Toad, I had the exact same thought when I was reading this. Carp didn't pitch until late September, and Furcal missed almost the entire second half. They were still one W away from going to the Series.
This is a lot of hand wringing over nothing.

Transition = Fancy term used to say we have to start over and rebuild.

Spot on fella!
StL is not going to miss Carp one bit.
He was out most of last year and with the emergence of the young arms they have, they are better off.
I still think that they should snag Lohse on a moderate deal...he is still available and is a solid 15 wins and 3.50 ERA for sure.
That offense will not skip a beat and is better off without Furcal. If they actually would deal for a .275 hitter at that spot, they are good.

That's when The Cards are at their best, when you don't expect them, don't for one minute think that this Team won't be in The Thick of It This October and November!!!

Is transition supposed to sound better than rebuilding?

Thats a good way to look at things. "They probably wont do well, BUT, IF THEY DO, I thought they would do well too."

I don't know guys Lohse is gone. Wainwright still doesn't look like the old Wainwright so this is likely a pitching staff without an ace. Garcia doesn't look to hold up since that shoulder hasn't been worked on and it's given him trouble for two years. The bullpen is solid. I see nothing but question marks in the rotation. That's not a comforting feeling.
Kozma played well over his minor league norms when he replaced Furcal. Yadi had a career year last year. We can't expect a repeat this year. The offense is good, but they will have to score a lot of runs based on what I see in the projected rotation.
I do think the long term outlook is bright, but I'll not be surprised at all if the Cardinals miss the playoffs this year.

True, but they'll give the Reds a run for it.
Craig. Holliday. Miller. Garcia. Wainwright. Motte. Rosenthal. Tavares. Jay. Yadi. Beltran. Freese. Lynn. Boggs. Good core.

The Rotation is definitely a concern, but I'm not as concerned as you are about Adam. I think he'll return to ace status this year. Garcia's health and how Lynn performs in his second year as a starter are critical. I like the young depth we have with Miller, Kelly and Rosenthal though.
