08:14 AM ET 03.08 | It wasn't all that long ago that, when asked about Rick Nash's upper body injury, that John Tortorella responded "None of your business" to a reporter. [Tortorella] says he doesn't like disclosing injuries because it's his No. 1 job to protect his players, and believes the fans and media don't have the right to know everything that's going on with the team. ... "[My] No. 1 responsibility is the hockey team. No one else. Not you. Not the public. No one else except those players. We demand a lot out of them. I think it's a two-way street, and I think we need to protect them in certain situations. I listen to some managers, coaches, they spend 15 minutes talking about injuries. I think it's ridiculous."

But I hear he gives Janet Gretzky inside info for, ummmm, recreational wagering purposes

Really? A TOR about something Tort's said weeks ago???

March 8, 2013  09:12 AM ET

Teams don't even give specific injury reports usually, except when it is obvious or a concussion.
You can't take two seconds to say "Player A has a lower body injury and is day to day, we expect him back next week?"
What a Dbag.

At least we don't have to look at his 'three fingers' pic.

For all you haters, he gave a very nice Presser last night; except when he called The Hamma out of shape.

The funniest part of this is last year when he called the Penguins the most arrogant team in the league. Making statements like this shows you are the most arrogant individual person in the league. I need this info, how else am I going to set this weekends lineup that get myself out of 3rd place in my fantasy league?

No, John, your #1 responsibility, as a hole, is the fans you ungrateful prick.

Fixed.

actually, HIS...and every coach...#1 responsiblity is to the team.
Team ownership and to some degree The GM are responsible to the fans, because they're the ones that put the team out there that the fans are (hopefully) going to come see. The coach's responsiblity is to make those pieces fit/work.
There's an olde saying in baseball, that can be altered for every sport:
"Never let the fans/press pick your starting pitcher"

I really dont see the big deal in disclosing injuries..."he has a concussion..he'll be back when he's medically cleared"..thats it...is it really that hard ?? Me thinks its about the coach's not giving the other team's any info at all..i think thats the bottom line.

I suppose to avoid the "headhunting," or headhunters, so to speak, but even that isn't gonna be avoidable forever. Eventually, it is going to get out what is wrong with someone, especially a concussion, and if someone wants to headhunt you on the ice...it's gonna happen.

I actually agree with you although I am in leagues year round NHL,NASCAR,NFL,MLB and those leagues have 5 figures each season, christ we charge $50 for each Free Agent a team picks up but money aside if it wasn't for the pay day I would 100% agree with your statement.....

The coach is the most visible. He's the one who talks to the media. Why not allow the burden to be put on his shoulders rather than his team?(Sorry. I'm a student of the Jose Mourinho school of managerial style.)

those guys are different. Fergie would be just as snarky as Torts if he were here...he even got fined the other day after that debacle in Trafford for not coming out to talk to the press.

to answer your question though, he is truly the guy that has to "play the hand he's dealt" (in most cases) so he has enough to deal with, especially in an age where "3 weeks and you're an all time legend" (thanks Adam Ant).
Let the guys that gave him the mess to work with (in some cases) deal with it

Such a fix can be applied to any number of former Leaf personnel.

And a lot of "current" personnel too.
